'94 V6 upgrades for summer 2005

Here are my ideas for upgrades and necessary work on my '94 3.4L this summer...
(In order of importance)

1.) New waterpump.
(It has to be done the pulley shakes right now, looks like the bearing might be going so I'm gonna replace it before it does.)

2.) New Fog lights.
(They've been burned out since I bought it)

3.) Electronic Shift-Kit.
(Bought a B&M Shift Plus kit, I read that firmer shifts = less wear)

4.) Headers.
(Been looking at getting headers from SummitRacing.com, and I may do a convertor delete to help improve flow even more)

5.) Throttle Body bypass.
(I've heard pros and cons of this mod, but since I don't drive my camaro in the winter I figure it can't hurt)

Those are my ideas for upgrades this summer so far. If you guys have any other ideas or input on my current list I'm glad to have it. I already have intake and some exhaust work done.

Gears will be one of the biggest bang for buck mods you can do.John

yeah, I was thinking about maybe putting in some different gears and while I'm at it putting in limited slip, that would make a big difference. But I wasn't sure what gears to put in, I would like some better performance but don't want to sacifice too much economy. Any input on which gears would be best and about how much it would cost to do?

if u can get a pc tune. ive seen from 5-20hp gains just from redoing your computer to match your upgrades. its a great thing, im not sure if u can do it, but look into it, im sure u wont be dissapointed

what tranny do you have? if you have an auto, and care about mpg, go with 3.42s. i put em in my 3.4 and i think it worked out well. my gas mileage improved, but i doubt it had anything to do with the gears (point is it doesnt hurt it) and the acceleration was vastly improved.

the TB bypass doesnt do much of anything on the sixer, but its free and dont hurt so why not, right?

im not familiar with summit racing headers for the 3.4, but just be careful they are street legal (if you care). pacesetter makes a street legal set, but they are sub-par at best. rksport makes a set but they are not street legal. (no EGR)

other stuff: there's a good amount of toys you can get. i would recommend some kindof tune, preferably dyno. if you cant get a dyno tune, i got a jet chips PCM and it worked wonders. i think others might dissagree but i cant argue with results.

give us an idea of your budget is and we can help you a whole lot more...

Well, with the stuff I listed already it comes to about $150, some things I have already paid for some I still have to get. I will probably dump at least $200 more into yet this summer, if I can find other things I want to do. The headers i was looking at are the pace setters so their legal, but why aren't they so good? I was also looking into getting new spark plug wires, since I'm planning on putting in new plugs this summer too. Any suggestions on wires?

Yeah spark plugs dont do crap without the wires, but how much money you got to spend?

CamarosRsweet94

Just on wires I don't wanna spend too much, no more than $50. However since I don't have to pay for school again till next fall I can easily afford to spend $500 - $1,000 this summer.

Well if you're happy with what you're gonna get or have, try to make your car look nicer by buying some beautification items for it, like a hood or a new grille, just try to get everything down performance wise before you go into looks and wires wont cost more than $50 I think. also have some $200 laying around if a problem just comes up out of no where, believe me you'll be greatful not having to ask your parents for money.

you'll never go wrong w/ msd's super conductor plug wires...

You have $1000 to spend? Why not upgrade to a 3800? Most expensive one I've seen for sale was for $700 out an '00. I don't know if you have the resources available to do a swap but you have the money.

CamarosRsweet94

I'd rather not do an engine swap, just mods to my current setup. I realize the 3.4L doesn't have the potential the 3800 or an LT1 has, but I think if I were to work on my 3.4L and make it pretty quick I would have something I could really take pride in.

Everywhere I look those MSD wires are like $60, anybody find em cheaper? Or maybe know of a good secondary brand?

Don't do the convertor delete IMO, unless you're going for LOUD, and you want to risk possibly scarificing torque. I'd say go with a high-flow; and most people would say if you had to do them not at the same time to get the catback before the headers..

I have already put on a new muffler, now I want to do headers. Does removing the Cat really make a car that much louder I've never heard people saying too much about that on here... Oh, and How much for a hi-flow cat like $250 -300? For that price I'll either just leave the stock cat in or remove it, either way it's free.

I got my magnaflow high-flow for under 50 bucks on ebay, and yes removing the cat will make it that much louder

I have flowmasters, not sure of the O.D. on the pipes. Probably 2.5" They are good till about 4k rpms then they sound not as good as I'd like 'em. If you have the cash do Borla and be happy.

CamarosRsweet94
03-01-2005, 09:54 PM
Borla don't make headers for the 3.4L so I'm pretty much SOL on getting a really good brand for those. Plus for the price I can get pace setters it's worth it. But I'm still unsure about removing the cat, not sure if I wanna do it or not, I don't want my car to sound crappy.

the idea that im toying with is running a straight pipe through my cat (its already gutted). havent had the drive to actually get under the car and see if that would work. the pacesetters are, to say the least, headers. i put em on my 3.4 and the ones i got didnt fit too well. what i can tell you is to get really good gaskets, dont use the ones that come with the headers. also, GET THEM COATED. finally, when/if you get the headers either you, or get someone to go over them very obsessively to make sure that they are not warped and that they will fit well against the head...

Savage Messiah

Pacesetter had many problems, but if you get ones they make now and haven't been sitting on the shelves for a few months you should be good to go.

CamarosRsweet94
03-03-2005, 01:29 AM
How can I tell if they are new ones or old ones?

Chevyracincamaro
03-03-2005, 11:23 AM
ask em how long theyve been sittin on the shelf. also, i got mine back in 2003, so they might be better now

CamarosRsweet94

I am probably going to be getting them from Summit, should I call them and ask them, or can I assume that summit will have some pretty new ones on hand?

FormulaLT1

Summit racing usually has a very quick turn around on parts. So I would assume there stock is pretty up to date.

Chevyracincamaro; do mean coated as in sprayed with anti-rust coating or do you mean wrapping them with thermal wrap? Because it is only a summmer car so I don't really have to worry too much about snow and salt making them rust all that fast. Also by warped do you mean they came from the manufacturer warped or they warp over time after installed?
