I know this is gonna sound like a dumb question but I have to ask. If you change your own oil, will the "change oil soon" light go off on its own? If not, how do you turn it off?

This is in your owners manual, but since you bought it used chances are you dont have one! I think it is something like this - Turn key on, but do not start. Press gas pedal to floor 5 times straight slowly and release. The oil change light will begin flashing, and when it stops flashing (5 sec) it has reset itself. If it didn't flash, it didn't work. It usually does not work the first time for me but it comes on so infrequently it isn't much trouble. Sometimes it takes 2 or 3 tries for it to work. Hope this helps.

STEP ON THE GAS?????
OK here's what you do. Go to info center. Change it to it says "oil life". Now hold down reset. May take up to 10 sec. It will reset oil life to 100%. Then your good to go.

Anyone know where I can look at an owner's manual online without having to buy it?

01 SE model

Can't help you with that one. Have a spare 1997 and 1998.

Also here's a toll free number 1-800-782-4356. That's the number from the back of my manual to order new manuals.

http://www.cootersautomanuals.com/autos/Pontiac.html

That place has your manual. There are a bunch of guys on this site that has other sites.

Good luck

Damn, we're in trouble. The "old man" is keeping an eye on us. And he's up late too.

YES, Step on the gas. The oil change mon itor in the SE is completely different (as in 100%) unrelated to the fancy system on the GT/GTP. In fact, there isn't even a reset button on it. The only button on it is for the Traction control - on/off. Assuming she does not have an option that I don't, My statement stands. Check an SE - Repeat - SE, owners manual before you call me crazy! We dont have an oil life monitor. We have a light that says "change oil soon" that comes on at seemingly random intervals. What I quoted is straight out of my owners manual as I did this in fact last week. And it worked.....

yes, with the key in the "ON" position, without the car running. step on the gas all the way down, and all the way back up 3 times in five seconds, it isnt the 5, but doing it an extra couple of times wouldnt hurt anything. and then it is reset, if it flashes.

You have got to be kidding.
I've only had GT, GTP and my GTX. Sorry about that. Have the owner's manual fot the 97. Next time I'll look, before putting the old foot in.
Again, sorry.

I stand corrected as well! I knew I had "5" in my head from somewhere! I couldn't cross check my manual because my car was covered with 6" of ice and snow! Lazy, I know! :iceslolan So my brain was frozen and a little dyslexic!.

Apology accepted Kustom Kid! I should have expected that from someone named "Jim". As I am also... :grinno:
