Here is my problem: I have a 93 explorer auto. tranny. It will not engage into 4 wheel drive. When I push the button I hear the idle drop down and a click noise towards the back of the vehicle. Any suggestions would be very appreciated.
Thank You,

You're having the problem that many of us with Gen 1 explorers have: the OTF 4x4 system was, ahem, not robust. The click that you're hearing in the back is the 4x4 control module, behind the panel where the jack is stored. The problem is either that that module is shot, or the shift motor on the transfer case has seized up. In either case, a search of this forum will turn up lots of information.
Good luck... I still haven't fixed mine.

This is a very common problem with ford explorers expecially with any locking hubs. If your relay is engaging that is a good sign. The first thing you need to do is get the vehicle off of the ground, so that you can put the truck in 4x4 to see if your front drive shafts turn. If they do not turn disregard this post. My guess is that the vehicle will go into low gear but the hubs do not lock. the most common reason for this is too much grease! some people grease these hubs like wheel bearings this is wrong. If the hubs have too much grease in them they will not engage. You may have to take the hubs apart and clean out all of the grease do not add wheel bearing grease use ATF(automatic transmission fluid). I had the same problem with mine. After cleaning the grease from the hubs the 4x4 works great. Hope I could help.
