Okay, some threads here have been drifting towards the issues in Africa, more specifically the tribal and ethnic conflict that exists in almost all Sub Saharan Africa. My question is how do these issues get resolved? Is there ever going to be an end to the violence in this region?
IMO there are but two possiblities:
1) Western powers serve as a guard force for the civilians that get caught in the racial hatred. Do not take tribal sides and just let the other duke it out. In this scenario you eventually get near Pan-African bloodshed that basically goes on until they get tired of death and destruction. The only thing the West can do again is help protect the refugees.
2) The West protects refugees and helps bring to power in key countries (Uganda, Rwanda, Sudan, etc.) to leaders who are willing and able to denounce the arbitrary ethnic differences enscribed on them by foreigners. Honestly, so many of the racial divides are not racial, their just random (see Tutsis and Hutus). However the problem is, you need leaders who were born in these countries to do this, the West cannot provide these people. The reason why I am skeptical that this possiblity will occur is that the last potential leader that could bhave brought any kind of peace to any region of SS africa was Shaka Zulu. Then before he could he was killed by the British.
Any ideas? This is a very hard topic that I think few people (including myself) have any real grasp on what we can do to help. For someone with more valid opinions than me, look up David Dollar and his article "eyes Wide Open" it's a very insightful (and short) piece on international aid.

I choose number 1. The only way you can have peace is through war. It is not any other countrys place to say what is going on there is right or not. Just give the US some time, eventually they will think of a good reason to invade and take it over anyway.

Africa is not all a mess. Its generally sub-Sahara that’s going through the worst of it. There is ethnic hatred there that spans centuries. There are also leftover colonization issues. Hundreds of thousands have been killed because they are the wrong religion. Millions are dying because their governments siphon off aide destined for the people. Millions more die from Aids – both from inadequate health care and a refusal to utilize birth control.
To help, the people must have a chance to make a life for themselves. How is that done? First – remove all trade barriers to their products. That means all the countries in the developed world (this includes the US, all of Europe, Russia and south east Asia) stop all agricultural subsidies. Once the people can make a living selling their products, they can improve their own life. Nobody pulls themselves further up the food chain living on handouts.
Education is a must. A large amount of ethnic hatred and the spread of aids can be eliminated with education. Not all by any means, but hundreds of thousands of lives saved is a plus in my book.
Stop the foolish restrictions on food donations. Saying that no genetically enhanced crops can be distributed to starving people is just moronic. Not allowing the farmers to use pesticides that would dramatically increase food production is foolish. Its true that some pesticides might take a year off someone’s lifespan, but to the person who’s starving to death – it might not be as big a deal. The pesticides I’m talking about have been used for years in other regions with no ill effects, but places in Europe and the States outlaw it (but we can afford to do that). Having starving people use our standards with a thousandth of the budget is ridiculous.

Removing trade barriers is not as jolly as it sounds. In fact, removing trade barriers in general means that all those nice Nike production tents move from Sri Lanka to Congo until the company realizes that half their workers are getting killed monthly. This actually discourages the proliferation of agricultural development and sends or stops forward progression of the society. So in essence, Free Trade=not so good
Education is a must. But such institutions can only be built and sustained if a populus has its baser needs met and a healthy respect for the lives of others. until these are realized in Sub-Saharan Africa, education is but a far off goal.

#1. Except don't even go there; allow the countries to resolve their internal conflicts themselves. Provide assistance if requested but let them proceed without outside intervention.

Incorrect. Removing trade barriers has nothing to do with Nike or any other multinational. They already produce products (generally agricultural ones) that they can't sell on the open market because of the subsidies given to existing manufacturers in the developed countries. How are they going to compete with farmers who get billions from the government? They can't.
Free trade is not only good, its the foundation for building wealth. With wealth comes improved health care and all the rest.

We have too many folks being gun ho in getting into wars. It just drains us and produces more hatred.
I wish that the U.S.A. applied those ideas presented above to Cuba and lift that stupid embargo.
