My check engine light went on the other day and i took my car to autozone to get a diagnostic reading, the reading only found one code and it was for a egr system failure, how much would it cost to fix and is it a time consuming projecT?

Not time consuming. I had mine done because i didn't know what it was. that damn thing was like 200(if i remember correctly) dollars from the dealer. I dont know what kind of car you have and I dont know if gst/gsx's are different or have them.

bad egr valve, plugged hoses/tubing, bad sensor. anything related with recirculation of exhaust back into the intake.

Chances are you could find a new EGR in the at the junkyard. That, or you could block it off entirely, however that won't fix your CEL problem.

well if you get it done at a dealership, the egr itself will be about 200 bucks (i have to find my receipt)

Merged because you made 2 threads that were the same. Don't do it again.

well the egr is there for emissions, plain an simple. it is made to opperate ate speeds between 30-70mph at light cruse speeds. it puts a inert gas back in to the cylinders to cool them down. when you run at steady high way speeds you dont need as much fuel to maintaine your speed. with less fuel the cylinder temp goes up and then you increase your nox emissions. it should be ran off manifold vac. to open and close the valve when you give it more throttle it closes and puts more fuel in to the cylinder thus having the same result. by taking it out you will run hotter at light cruse speeds. you might notice a little change in gas milage but it will not increae the hp of your car. by running hotter you do run the risk that if you get hot enough that you could melt pistons but i know many people that have no problems after taking it out.

when you throw a CEL for blocking the egr on a 2g does it make the ecu run in a safe mode or anything?

i dont think so, it seems that the car dropped a little bit of speed in the 30-50 mph area, not sure if its because of the problem or because of a safe mode.sorry i couldnt be of much help..dsmmodder
