first kill in my new Evo

So I play in a summer baseball league with a bunch of the guys I played college ball with. We met up today for the first time since last summer to throw around the bean and laugh at the person who gained the most weight. One of the guys on the team who really liked my old SRT-4 asked me if I had done anything else to it since last summer. When I told him I sold it his jaw dropped. He said he'd bought an R32 and had been looking forward to a race. When I told him I bought an Evolution he didn't wanna race at first, but then he changed his mind when I told him the SRT-4 w/stage 2 had more more hp/tq anyways. He didn't wanna race from a dig because he had snow tires on the car and said he sucked at AWD launches anyway so we headed to Foothill Expressway in Palo Alto (right by Stanford University for those unfamilair w/the Bay Area). We each had a passenger and about 50lbs of baseball equipment in the trunk. Not sure about him, but I had 3/4 tank of gas.

Once we found a littler clearing we slowed down to about 25mph. He honked once and we were off. He jumped a half car at first and then I began putting a hurt on him...as in 3-4 carlengths before 90mph. :naughty: I shut down before 100mph because I could tell he had started to slow down. A few seconds later he pulled up next to me with a big grin and was just shaking his head "can I borrow your turbo for the rest of the weekend?" LOL. It was all good. I got him in terms of performance but I gotta admit that his R32 has me beat in terms of ride quality and creature comforts. Later on he took me for a ride and it rides like damn luxury car compared to my Evo. Well anyways...I wouldn't trade for anything. :grinno:

...an R32 Skyline?

Performance before comfort is what I go for. My Civic is poor in both categories, but I'll live for the time being. Good race, glad the dude was real cool about losing. I've heard great things about the R32's as well. They can be made into quite the contender with a few mods (from what I hear). Good kill. L8...

Edit: R32 is a Volkswagen GTI (or just has the body of one I assume).

No, not a Skyline. I would have been on the other end of that one. It's an Volkswagon R32 like the one pictured below. They are also AWD but only have a 240hp V6.

i'd almost prefer a VR6 to an R32, i heard the R32 weights 3800lbs dry? i could be wrong but that would mean i could take it too in terms of power to weight ratios

awesome evolution, but of course he has you beat on creature comforts, don't you have the RS w/ relatively little extras to it?

DSM what?

No DSM cars have been featured in this thread. The Lancer Evolution is completely Mitsubishi...

With a name like Silver_GTR34 I figured somebody as JDM as you would of known that.

Good race man, hope you have more in the EVO. I always wanted to run one of those R32 but I can't get any to run out here. Question, when you race from a dig, will you use the 5,000 rpm clutch drop or not? And why?

awesome race, and awesome car. i love evo's, and, yes the r32 is a pig. if anyone is considering buying one, wait for the new body style gti to come oout, and just get the v6...much better deal.

good luck w/that evo. do u have any upgrades planned?

but that 4G63 is only a 4G63 by name. it looks nothing like the older 4G63's found in the DSM's. the EVO's stopped using those old design 4G63's since the EVO 3.

and trumach1racer, the race was from a roll.

Good kill. I'm assuming you have the 2005 Evo, which comes with the hotside turbo. An Xede really makes those cars sick (Probably best to get a reflash from Shiv though, AVOID AL!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!). On Shiv's dyno (Where stock Evo's dyno at 190-210 awhp), you'll see 250 awhp with just the reflash/ piggyback. It's $400 for the reflash, and $900 for the piggyback. Avoid cold air intakes btw, as Evo's are known to lose power with them.

Nice kill Steiner, good to see that EVO in action.

About the DSM coments while technically its true that the EVO is not a dsm, in the US from a subjective point of view it is the new "DSM" because its a good cheap performance AWD car carrying the torch passed by the GSXs. Where the new eclises dropped the ball the US EVO picked it up. Just look at all the former DSM tuners that now are EVO tuners(eg. Buschur, RRE).

Oh and to add to Z28's mod advice, this is one of the cheapest and most efective mods I've seen:

Thanks guys. Yeah my Evo is the RS model so there are very few creature comforts. Doesn't bother me one bit. As far as performance mods...the car is less than 2 weeks old so I haven't had any time (or money) to do anything to the car. The only thing I've done is add a stereo system.

As far as 5k RPM clutch drops...not if I can help it. You only get so many of those before you have clutch problems, you know?

Funny that you guys mention Vishnu. Up here in NorCal it's become a dirty word for Evo owners. Even though their shop is less than a 10 minute drive from my house I'm probably going to steer clear. From what I've heard the real tuners here in NorCal are WORKS in San Franisco. Eventually I'll probably do a cat-back and a flash.

No I don't think 3000gt's can be classified as dsm's but I see where you're coming from. There are 3 or 4 r32's running around in sarasota if you're close to that part of FL.

Steiner nice run in the evo man, thats such a nice car. How does the top end of the evo compare to the top end of the srt-4? I ask because I've heard evo's drop off at higher speeds and was wondering if it was that noticeable compared to the srt-4.

That's a good question. My Evo obviously doesn't pull up top like my SRT-4 did w/stage 2 and exhaust, but I would say that it pulls a little better than a stock SRT-4. It's hard to say for sure though. I mean I only had my SRT-4 stock for 2 weeks before I put in stage 1. A buddy of mine has a bone stock '04 SRT-4. We're planning to do a couple runs out on the freeway when the weather clears up. Win or lose I'll post the results here. We're both really curious.

Why does Vishnu have a bad rep?

I've heard a lot of different things from some pretty well respected local members. Things like people complaining of audible detonations after expensive Vishnu tunes all the way to "Shiv is more of a journalist than a tuner". To be honest with you though, I'm curious to know more details too...

Yeah that didn't last long did it? It's ridiculous. Censorship sucks.

EDIT: Here is the PM I just got from the mod...

your new post has been delete it, reason is because it has been talked too and beat up to death before. It only brings negativity to the board and nothing is ever solve.
theres a few threads that can be found in the cellar if you are interested about Vishnu performance.
or you can PM different members of the board to get reviews about Visnhu products and there feed back.
Also feel free to discuss it at a norcal meet with some of the local evo members. They will more then happy feel you in what has happen before.
thanks

3000GTs are not DSMs. All DSMs where built in Normal Illinois. The 3000GTs and Stealths where assembled in Nagoya Japan. the 4G63 found on the older Eclipses is not the same 4G63 on the modern EVO, yes same engine code, different built. I believe Tat also explained it already.

Steiner, this may be a dumb question but.....you broke the motor in already right? I hate to see ya racing that baby so soon before its allowed to set in.
congrats on the purchase, good choice and good race.

Oh yeah. I made sure to keep it under 5K RPM's for the first 600 miles. The car has about 900 miles on it right now. Besides the run with the R32 I've really only pushed it one other time though.

The '05 models have some minor changes to the turbo and wastegate that Mitsubishi claims on paper to have added 5hp and 12tq. The new Evos seem to be pushing another 2lbs-3lbs of boost too. So on the dyno they seem to putting down closer to 15hp/10tq over the previous '03 and '04 Evo models. The boost does taper off a little at high RPM, but a free flowing exhaust should improve that. I still think the car needs something done in the low RPM range though. Boost kicks in with a rush, but not until about 3K RPM's. If I could drop that down to 2,500 RPM's this car would be nuts around town. As it is right now, it's just a little 2.0L Lancer until you romp on the fun pedal. :iceslolan
