can my 87 GL run w/o a computer?

I've always sort of suspected that my car doesn't have a computer, because I can't find it. The repair manual *haines* says it's supposed to be up under the steering column, but I don't see it. Also, there doesn't seem to be an o2 sensor on my catalytic converter, that I can find, and a carb mechanic I talked to said if the carb has an electronic plug on it then it's computer controlled. And it does. But I can't find the computer. Is it possible it would have been removed before I owned the car for some reason? Can the car run without it? Any ideas appreciated.

I should add that the car does run.

It could run without a computer, but whoever switched it over would have to know what they were doing.

Did subaru put computers in all the cars? Maybe it was made without one?

No, they did not.

But it would be up under the steering column if there was one, and it would be fairly easy to find... correct?

you might try looking behind or above the glove box, alot of car makers locate them there.

If it is a carb'd Subaru, with no O2 sensor, there is no computer

the 87's half came carb'd and with no cpu. They are impossible to find correct manuals for because of this. Fair warning also, part of the carb system is vacuumed so if you have problems with it in the future and the subaru mechanics look it you with the "duh..." face when they can't figure it out.. it's probably the nasty vacuum issue rearing it's ugly head.

I don't know about the fuel injected ones made late in the 87' model run but they may have a cpu, I don't know.
