Automatic Daytime Running Lamps

I have a 2001 Grand Vitara. The one thing that I do not like about the car is the stupid daytime running lamps. If other drivers and/or pedestrians cannot see the car, I doubt they will notice the lights.

Does anyone know a, hopefully simple, way to prevent these things from coming on when you start the engine? I doubt Europeans have to deal with these things.

Thanks,

Norris
