i've got a 89 cherokee and have had this specific problem before, the problem is that you san manually shift the auto tranny but it wwont downshift on its own in the drive position, you can push the pedal to the floor and it wont downshift. I thought it was the throttle position sensor but this didnt fix the problem. last time it just started working fine after a couple of days of driving it like that. Now its been like this for 2 weeks, it shifts fine and no slipping but when you push the pedal it wont downshift. I am becomeing more impatient with this, i dont know whether it is the computer that controls the tranny or the wiring, i do know that i have taken all the black tape of the wire and tested them and they seem fine. The fuses seem to be fine, Im out of options unlees it the tranny. what do you think.

Do yourself and your Cherokee a favor. Find a really reliable and honest transmission specialist. I did that right away when my '94's started making me think about it. Your may or may not have the Aisen-Warner 4 which is one of the best trannys ever made. But whatever, take it to a good tranny doctor. Auto-Transmissions are very complex and you will have many sleepless nights. It may be a simple thing like a vacuum module and really cheap to fix. Please do not start guessing about a thing like that. Okay, sermon is over.

Your kickdown linkage may be out of adjustment. Get a manual and readjust same. It's cheap the manual will come in handily many times. LUCK

I had the same problem with my '88. Sometimes it worked, most times it didn't. For a number of reasons and over time, I changed the tranny fluid and filter, CPS, TPS, and a variety of other sensors. It improved a bit after the fluid change. It improved a lot after the TPS change.

I'd suggest a tran fuid flush and replace first. You said the TPS was not the problem. How did you determine that?
