RPMs climb, but car won't shift

This just started, though I've noticed a power loss lately. My 92 Z24 hasn't had the same kick as it did.
I was driving down the highway in 5th gear, and my shift light came on, telling me I still need to go up a gear.
Not long after that, I had to gear down on the offramp, when I started back up again I couldn't get it to hit 50km/hr. It's like I could shift, but the car wasn't going up in gears. yet it was.
My RPMs are all over the place. I've been told this could be just needing tranny fluid.
Anyone have any thoughts on this?

I wouldn't say tranny fluid although there is a very small dipstick for trans fluid on the driverside under the brake master cylinder on the trans it a little black handle that sats 'trans' on it! Check that. But i doubt that's you problem. You could have a faulty shift cable. Get someone to sit in the car when it's switched off. look down towards the trans and you'll see two levers with cables attached, get them to shift the gears about and see if they both move! if not then cables are buggered. Other than that slipping clutch?! to test this drive along at about 25 knh and then put it in 4th anf floor it with the clutch pedal all the way up and fully engaged, if it revs but don't accel then the cluth is fooked!

Careful if you decide to flush the trans. Some high-mileage cars that get this done end up destroying the trans only to find out that the old fluid was helping keep it together.

That's usually autos though.
