Well, today 2/24/05 my car broke down at 3:20pm..i just released the clutch all the way and started rolling(5mph) when the motor seized, shocking the drivetrain to a stop ,locking the wheels up,and squelling the tires, when i tryed to start it at the gas station the starter could not turn over the motor...as if somthing was fighting agist the starter. i donk know what it is that making it seize but i know its bad.
DAY BEFORE...
The car ran fine all day , i drove it to work fine but then as i was leaving work i started it up. and heard a metal on metal wraping almost sounding like a wood pecker. between about 2500RPM and 3500RPM the wrapping wood pecker was the loudest. i had to drive 10 miles like that. i had no choice. i got home i checked the oil in the crankcase with the dipstick, very odd there isnt any oil in the crankcase, the dip stick was bone dry. i filled her up with a quart and a half of oil. let it idle. i check the oil filter, it was on nice and tight, i know how oil likes to leak out after the oil filter unscrews its self...the next moring i let the car idle for about 10min then i drove to school, the wrapping was gone but as soon as you accelerate the wood pecker comes back. then i was on my way to the dentist after school and the events of 2/24/05 happened. the car didnt make a sound when it sezied, it just shut off and the wheels locked up, almost as if i stalled. the motor didnt turn over as i tryed to start it . the started couldnt even budge the flywheel.

i hate to say it but is this crankwalk? or did a bust a rod? or both?

Damn, sorry to hear that dude. When my transmission was starting to sieze (for the second time) i also heard a "woodpecker" kinda sound shortly before my wheels locked and my motor would not turn over. There was nothing wrong with my motor, just major transaxle failure. Upon opening the tranny, I dicovered that my 4th gear sprocket had a huge chunk missing. So basically the chunk fell down into the transaxle causing it to sieze. I still don't know why my motor would not turn over until I repaced the tranny.

the wood pecker sound is definatly coming from the motor. but hey thats another possibilty...

I think you fucked up a rod my car made the same sound when I broke a rod. Although I just got a new engine before something like this happened. Sorry for you loss.

your rod went SNAP! (or something of that sort) how did you run it out of oil without noticing any leaks or anything? did it burn that much oil or what?

but you just said it was "bone dry" so you added one and a half quarts of oil. So my question would be this...
Thats all the oil you put in? before you took this trip the day after you noticed it was low did you not add anymore? the filter would hold at least half of what you put in. If thats the case then, no offense, but you got what you had comming to ya. sorry about your bad luck

The knocking was probably a rod bearing. They are usually the first to go when there is any oiling problem. Same for the thrust bearing, first to go with a lack of lubrication. So while crankwalk was not the cause of this problem, odds are you got it anyway before the end ;)

i had about 2 quarts in there, as of january , then i checked it(bone dry) and i added another quart and a half...

but either way im forced to pull the motor, so now is the perfect oppurtunity to do a 6 bolt swap. now i just need to find a low milage 6 bolt and some friendly dsmers around here to help... looks like my mom is driving me to school from now on...or untill i get my car fixed.

<<<<UPDATE>>>>

Allright, after some looking around ,about a 6 bolt swap and the time frame i wanted to do it in, all 6 bolt options seemed expensive and i would have to be with out a car for a month. but then i talked to jake (eclipseRST) and this is whats going down....
6 bolt block (20 thousanths over bore)(deck surfaced)(honed)
6 bolt head (deck surfaced)
6 bolt internals
1G intake manifold
brand new 1G valve train
new gaskets
new timing belt
new seals
polyurthane motor mounts
balance shafts removed
ACT 2100lb pressure plate
ACT street disk clutch pack
ACT throw out bearing
Stainless steel oil line
resurfaced 6 bolt flywheel

*0 miles on the motor completly rebuilt*

roughly, it will be done with in 2 weeks
