My mom has a 2001 Sebring Sedan LXI. Whatever the system is with the 4 disc changer is what she has. She has owned it since it was new and sometime last year the radio started having some problems. Any time the radio is playing the sound is excessively loud, if you try to turn it down you recieve no sound at all. She tried to get the dealer to fix it and even tried to talk to Chrysler directly but her warranty had already run out. They basically offered her a free radio for the price of installation...it was way overpriced just for installation and the radio would carry no warranty, when we asked could we just recieve the new radio that was a no go. Now I am trying to get this fixed for her because the prices they qouted her are rediculous. It seems to me the radio has some sort of short but I wasnt sure if this was from the head unit or something else. I read somewhere there was an electrical problem with the dome light blowing out fuses to the radio but the fuse is fine. I am pretty much lost so any help would be appreciated thanks!

Head units have a tendency to fail. My recommendation is if you're tired of messing around with dealer items, go aftermarket like Best Buy or Circuit City. You can purchase an extended warranty from them that covers it from lightning strikes to theft.

Well the area I live in isn’t the best...so I wouldn’t want to bring more attention to her car. We have had theft issues we think the same thief has tried to steel it a few times and only managed to damage the locks. Why anyone would steal it I dunno, plus its parked right in front of the house but the car isn’t driven during the week for the most part. If I get an OEM head unit with CD player could I use that in its place they are pretty cheap on Ebay, also don’t these have anti theft systems would I have to get the dealer to activate it? It is funny I have a 2003 SE-R nothing fancy no one has touched it also I had a 98 Regal GS loaded that wasn’t touched either but someone kept messing with the Sebring for some reason.

Yeah, eBay has a lot of Chrysler CD players for sale at really low prices. Here's a word of caution, make sure you buy a unit from 2001 and earlier. You can get one out of an 99-01 Grand Cherokee, 98-01 Intrepid, Concorde, LHS, 300M, etc. Mid-year 2002, Chrysler changed the electrical connector on the back of the unit from the old 2-7 pin connector to the newer one-22 pin connector. If you find one out of an '02-'05, don't get it, it's a pain trying to find the adapter to work for it. Just a word of caution so that you don't end up getting the wrong part and having to relist it on eBay b/c it's not compatible with your car.
