96 LC Won't Start

I am having a problem with my 1996 Lincoln Continental with 146.000 miles that is driving me and my dealer nuts. It’s been a great road car and I hate to give up on it.

My problem is a starting problem. The car won’t start, and it has a relatively new battery. Everything works, including windows, headlights, seats, etc. Turning the ignition key to the start position does NOT dim the lights, so it is drawing no current.

The car has been in the shop a total of three months (yes, that’s MONTHS) since January 2004, trying to duplicate the problem. My dealer, Gurley Ford in Gallup NM, replaced a board last January, part #F5OY-13C788-A ($452 plus labor!). This seemingly cured the problem for a few months, but the problem has been recurring with increasing frequency. I have given them the car twice; the last time for four weeks. They have driven it many times and tried to re-start it. It worked every time for them. I took it home about four weeks ago and it has failed me three times.

The most likely scenario is: drive the car for about an hour so it’s well warmed up. Shut it off and wait anywhere from 10 minutes to an hour and try to start it. 19 times out of 20 it will start. It’s that 20th one that’s the killer. Once it’s in this state, it takes at least an hour of waiting for it to start again.

Assuming it had something to do with the anti-theft system, I have tried all different ways to unlock the car: keyless entry, buttons on the door and using the key itself. There doesn’t seem to be a difference.

Sorry to be such a long posting, but I would appreciate any help you can give me on this.

Um, simple silly question...did anyone or you have the starter checked out? I had a solenoid going bad and once it gets hot, it doesn't start. I had to change mine. Quick job if you're a do it yourself-er. Let us know how it goes. Good luck!

when you say wont start ,is the engine turning over and not firing or is not turning over at all?if it is turning over with no fire the first thing id check is the crankshaft sensor and its wiring.ive seen several engines like this before and had a jeep that was the same.in my jeep the wires had become corroded and created an intermittant problem.the sensor itself is not exspensive 17 bucks in the parts store.and not that hard to fix.
