Dear Firebird enthusiasts,
I have a 1996 Pontiac Firebird with the 3.8 liter engine with 87,000 miles on it. Recently the "Security" system light came and has stayed on now for several weeks. There isn't any trouble starting the car or driving it but the light staying on makes me think that there is something that is going to happen in the near future and this should be taken care of now. How can I get this light to go off? What could the problem be? What could have made it come on? Any help will be greatly appreciated. Thank you for taking the time to read this.

Try unhooking the battery overnight and hooking it back up the next day.

Well I know whenever I programmed my keyless entry remote for my car, the security light came on for some reason. I ended up unhooking the battery for a few minutes, reconnected it, and the light went off. Try that and good luck.

If that doesn't help you may have to take it to a GM dealer and have them take a look at it. friend has a Monte Carlo that the light was on for a while and finally it started randomly giving him trouble. Basically, on some days he could not start his car and on others it was fine. If the disconectiong the battery trick doesn't fix it, it may be that there is a problem with the security part of the computer and it needs to be replaced.

Thanks a lot guys. I'll unhook the battery and leave it that way for several hours and hopefully the computer will clear out. I chatted with a guy at the Pontiac dealership and he told me that eventually I wouldn't be able to start my car at all because the fuel system would be cut off due to the way the anti-theft system works. Yikes...that would totally suck. I hope I don't have the same issues that your friend with the Monte Carlo had!
