Prevent driver from using put into 3rd rather than Drive

I've just got a "new" (well at least new to me) 2004 calvalier. I've found that it is VERY easy to put the car into 3rd gear when I really want "Drive". (Unfortunately I even drove at expressway speeds in 3rd thinking that the engine is just "noisey" until my wife noticed the tach showing higher on the way home than on the way there.)

Is there any easy way to stop the stick from going past Drive when putting it into gear? Probably not, but I just thought I'd ask in case I do something stupid again.

Throw it back into drive and let go of the button and push fowards and it shouldn't go any farther than D

just watch out it wont do any damage just a little more wear in the long run and less gas mileage.

I guess this is not what I wanted -- or I'm not doing it right. The car doesn't "Slip" into 3rd. I just don't want to be able to put it into 3rd at any time when I start to drive.

The use of 3rd gear is only for very special circumstances. I would rather have to do something extra special to put the car into 3rd. Right now I have to look VERY closely at the stick and it's position EVERY time I start to drive. The position of the stick and the red marker are not that obvious to me. I suppose I'll get better with time (or at least detect the engine rev'ing more, but I think GM makes it TOO easy to get into 3rd.

it doesn't actually select 3rd it stop the trans shifting any higher so it will go into first the same as when you put it in drive but if you knock it forward you'll be ok for when it needs to hit o/d. It wont do any damage whatsoever!
