More Timing issues

3SFE motor is a Japan import replacement. The timing belt was replaced, new injectors and all tune-up parts. The engine won't run in 1-3-4-2 order. It will run in 1-2-4-3 order but has a mild idle miss with big bog off the bottom. All cam and pulley marks are correct, double checked. I used Haines manual for guidance but I just can't figure this one out.
Help...

Stupid question: Are you sure you have the spark plug wires connected to the distributor in the correct order? Are you sure the jap engine has the same firing order as you expect? Are you sure the valve timing is correct (timing belt off a tooth)?

Yes, I've gone back and forth on the belt/teeth timing. I used all the marks as indicated in the Haines manual. I'm at a point where I can remove the t-belt cover in about 15 mins. I was wondering about USA vs. Japanese timing and if there was a difference. The car is now not worth much as it was pretty hammered when we got it. It was supposed t be a minor project/beater until my son could mive up to something better. may be time to scrap it.

It wouldn't be the first time that the engine wasn't turned exclusively clockwise and the slack in the timing belt caused bad valve timing.

BTW, I have seen mistakes in all manuals, including Haines. Maybe you should double check with the Toyota factor manual.

I hand cranked the engine 2 full turns to make sure the blt was not slack and to verify the timing marks matched up. I'll have to find a Toyota service manual. do you know of anywhere online where I can see a manual.?
