does the 2g eclipse have tranny problems? i was reading reviews on carsurvey.org, and a significiant amoutn of people had to have their tranny's replaced. i was considering a 2g over a 1g, but now im doubting it. has anyone else had these problems or heard of others that do? if i spend the extra moeny to get teh 2g, i wont be able to afford putting in a new transmission.

well if its a clutch prolem, thats no bigge cuz i woulda got a better clutch anyways as i upgraded the car. im talking stick, where some people have gear problems, such as the car having a bad second gear, nt going into first correctly, etc. could all this be transmisison fluid problem? and these people just wernt very careful? if thats the case, and not that the car has a bad tranyn stock, then ill keep looking for one

Mitsu transmissions aren't all that great, im on my 3rd one(in ~12 years). I'm pretty sure the 1G's (excluding the 4g37) use the same manual transmission as the turbo 2G's. Allthough I do not see why a 4g37 tranny wouldn't work w/a 4g63, but the ratio's would probably be inpractical on a turbo(Since you'd probably be reving 3900rpm or more @ 75mph in 5th gear). Obviously there are differences between a FWD and AWD tranny

1g and 2g turbo trannys are very similar. 1g had a slightly stronger 3-4 gear set/hub/slider, but only 2 years IIRC. 2gs have better shifting second gear synchro. My trannys are always a combination of the two.
What it comes down to is people beat the DSMs to shit. The trannys are fine. But, in an AWD car there is no where for the power to go, so tranny parts break. Most common failure is the center diff. People try sidestepping the clutch to be cool, get a little wheelhop, center diff explodes, small pieces go out and destroy the rest of the gears/shafts before they even get the car stopped.
Replace the center diff with a 4 spider piece from shepperd or speed design BEFORE the stocker breaks, and the stock tranny does extremely well. I know several people running deep into the 11s on otherwise stock trannys. ;) Over time and mileage any tranny will need a synchro replacement. 2Gs are getting up there in the mileage now, and like 1Gs, are going to start getting noisy. A tranny rebuild is only 800 bucks with shep, and it will last you another 150k miles. I dont see that as enough of a problem to deter me from wasting my life on these cars...

well $800 for the tranny rebuild with the part isnt bad. however, i think im still going to look for a 1g unless i find a cheap 2g. the 2g's go for more and i wouldnt be able to afford a tranny rebuild.
