i just bought a 1994 wrangler 2.5 5-speed. sometimes it won't start. doesn't matter if its warm or cold. sometimes it will start right up like normal. others it will take 3-5 times to get it to start. when it won't start if i let it crank to long it will load up with fuel and backfire a bit. it it an electirical problem, or sprark? please help me..email me at
matthew_a_wilson@dresser-rand.com with any suggestions...please

Is the Jeep in a good state of tune? (Plugs, cap and rotor). If not, tune it up first and let us know.

And welcome to AF.

You may also want to try some Drigas or HEET in the gas tank.

A complete tune up has been done. That is why I am confused. plugs, wires, cap rotor, air filter. pcv and i haven't done the fuel filter yet but i will when it warms up. Any ideas?

94 is fuel injection I'm pretty sure. I'd think it might be either a fuel delivery issue or maybe something like the crank position sensor.

Have you tried a gas treatment? Do that and replace the fuel filter would be my next choice.

I think your onto something witht the crank position sensor. i forgot all about that. it needs to to spark at the correct time because it doesn't have an ignition module. i'll change the fuel filter along with gas treatment. if that doesn't do it i will resort to the cps. thanks

i just finished changing the fuel filter and put dry gas in. i haven't started it up yet but wish me luck. the only other problem that i am having is a clunking coming from underneither my feet. it only occurs when i'm hitting bumps in the road. it does it when in 2wd and 4wd...doesn't matter. i've checked everything, exhaust, tight and plenty of clearance. the shocks and springs are all tight. i laid under it for about an hour checking everything. i just got it and it has a axle over lift kit on it. any suggestions with that. it does have a drop pitman arm like it is suppose to but they didn't drop the transfer case , could that have something to do with it?

Try taking a look at the front sway bar connecting links. In my '97 it was a two piece unit that had a center knuckle joint that eventually went bad and made the clunking noise. Yours may be the same.

Since it occurs on bumps I'd take a look at the suspension. How many miles? If a lot, it could be the ball joints also.

it has 130 k miles on it. a lot. but the suspension looks like it is good shape. tomorrow i am installing a transfer case drop because it didn't come with one and it really needs it because the angle is severe. i'll check the ball jts while i have it in the air. i changed the fuel filter tongiht, haven't started it more than once to so i can't tell you if it helped. i'll let you know tomorrow. thanks for the advice.

okay as for the starting problem. i changed the coil, fuel filter, added dry gas and fuel injector cleaner, and changed the coil wire just to make sure. still hasn't fixed the problem. had the tps sensor tested and it tested good. might change it out next..any other ideas?

Just the crank sensor. Everything else that my "backyard mechanicness" would check has been done.
