Fuel system issue

Hi folks, Im experiencing what I think is a fuel system issue and could use some help. 2000 Cav, base model wont start, but was working just fine beforehand. Got spark, battery seems ok based upon ear and spark, but havent checked any levels. I also can hear what may be some pump activity when i turn the ignition which stops after a few seconds. I reseated the gas cap, checked what i could for wiring but didnt see anything obvious. I also switched out what i believe was the relay as there were two identical ones next to each other in the relay box but nothing changed. i checked all fuses under the hood, but havent checked any others. I also took out the fuel filter and tried turning over the car, but didnt get fuel pumping out of the line on to the ground. Does this mean there is a bad pump or is the system smarter than that? No manual available so any reference to something online would be helpful as well. A description fo the fuel system would help. Any quick checks i can make to narrow down this issue? Also, if anyone knows where I can get a CHEAP replacement fuel pump (if it comes down to that) please please let me know.

try www.autozone.com, surf their repair and diagnosis areas for some ideas. It seems to me that the pump is 1] toasted or 2] not getting the elctrical signals needed to run it.

It's a real B**** to get to the connector to the pump, as it's inside the tank, and of course the tank is squeezed so tight into the body, you can't get to any of it easy. BUT, if you can get to the connector, unplug it, put a voltmeter on it, and see if the wiring is sending signals to the pump. If it does, then something went west with the pump itself.

Im pretty sure it is the pump now. I read some other sites in which their was a similar issue and which mentioned banging on the tank with an rubber mallet. I did this with the fuel filter out and verified that fuel was not flowing before , but did flow after, so i think the pump is indeed toasted. So now comes the fun of finding a new pump etc and swapping it out. Im still interested in any comments on the install or parts finding. thanks for help.

It will become even more fun when you find out how much a new fuel pump for a cavy cost ** Outrageous **. I actually went with a performence after market fuel pump which cost hundreds less then the factory.

Go to Autozone. They have it in stock for $230.00. Pick up a hayes manual for your vehicile. Make sure you have two jack stands. You will need to raise the back end, and then remove the gas tank to gain access. Use a floor jack and a block of would to lower the tank.

Good luck, Not tricky but time consuming.

Thanks to everyone who helped out. Found flaky black crap inside the gas tank and I suspect it got into the gas pump somehow as the pump was slightly loose in its housing, in contrast to the new pump which was fixed in place fairly well. I suspect the old pump was fine, just that the crap inside the tank caused it to gum up, but ended up changing it out anyway...who needs $230 right? We emptied the tank, blew it dry and vacuum and wiped out as much flaky black crap as possible and now i will be diligent about locking the gas cap also. I believe I recall one piece of flaky black crap in an old fuel filter, but am not sure. Size of flaky black crap was up to about a dime. Upa nd running ...now onto A/C issue ...fun fun fun...to the next posting..
