ok so the other day i was driving home from work and the timing belt broke and the car died...because the water pump went out and stuck so the belt broke...now i know how to replace the belt and pump but how do i know if everything is alined right. i know that the cam gear has 2 notiches that line up with the head so i can put that in the right place but what about the crank shaft and pistons how do i find where to turn it to to line everything back up??? p.s. befor i knew it was the belt i tryed to start it so i know one part of the motor turn and the other didnt. its gonna cost me 800 to hav it fixed but if i can do it id love to know how.

ok to line it up take out all the spark pluggs and pul a screwdriver in the hole that is farthest to the right then turn the crank untill you feel the piston go all the way up then thats top dead center for the crank then the cam shaft has a notch like u said but after you do all that it should be all lined up so just put the belt on and fire it up pm me back for any questions..

dastreetracer has it basically right, but after you bring the #1 piston (furthest right when looking from front of car) to TDC, you need to be sure you are on the compression stroke. take off the distributor cap and make sure the rotor is pointing to the #1 cylinder. if it isn't, turn the crank one full revolution and that'll do it.
P.S. you can also set the #1 piston to TDC by looking down the notches on the timing belt cover. there are two of them that kinda look like gunsights. if you sight down them theyshould be pointing to a small mark on the left most side of the crank pulley. but you still have to take of the dizzy cap and make sure you're on the compression stroke.
good luck

Correct me if I am wrong, but if the timing belt broke while driving (depending on the speed), there maybe some bent valves and shit right. You might want to get the engine checked out first. Thats what I was told when my timing belt broke. Only thing is, it broke in my driveway, so mines was fine.

You are correct sir, if there was any kind of load on the motor at all when the timing belt failed then there is a great possibility that you have bent valves and possibly damage to the pistons. You certainly should pull the head off and inspect before you go any further.

if you suspect you have bent valves, remove the valve cover and check the valve lash. If the valve is bent, then it wont close all the way and that particular valve will have an abnormally large amount of clearance from the tip o fthe valve stem to the lifter.
I've personally witnessed 3 different d series engines breaking timing belts while running and none of them bent any valves... its like a 50/50 chance.
as far as timing procedure, rotate your bottom end so that all the pistons are in the center of the cylinder, and then rotate the head so that the set of opposing lines on the cam gear run parallel to the head surface, and the mark by itself lines up with the arrow on the lower timing cover. then line up the single mark by itself on the crank pulley with the mark on the bottom timing cover. install the belt, making sure that neithe rthe head or bottom end turn out of alignment with each other. then rotate the engine atleast 1 complete turn (all 4 strokes) counter clockwise, and tighten the tensioner.

get a haynes manual, if you plan on fixing it your self.
