Anyone know how I managed to break my 3.73 Richmond Pinion Gear, and not the ring gear? It's an 86 rearend and the gear was about 2.5 years old. Also does anyone know what the max camshaft would be for an 86 TPI ECM?

Curry makes a stronger bolt in rear end for these cars and it's about $2700. But Richmond makes a gear you can buy with a seperate shim kit which is only $300 total in parts. Then it has to be set up. CORRECTLY. Mine lasted 2.5-3 years with daily abuse, I thought the ring gear would break though. The Rear end and the gear both can be purchased from Summit.

Exactly It really depends on the horsepower you intend to have or have now. I believe mine was broken when we were testing a supercharger on my car. Mines a 350 with a Holley Stealth ram 24lb injectors,58mm Throttle body MSD and so on.....

10 bolts can handle a bit of power if you do some work to them. When you get lots of torque and traction though they do tend to die. If I ever break my 9 bolt im replacing it with an 8.8" rearend!

Theres a guy here in ontario that takes fbody rearends and cuts off the axle tubes. Then gets an 8.8 and cuts off the tubes and welds the gm tubes onto it. That way it bolts right in no problem. Its a strong as hell rearend and quieter and uses up less power than the 12 bolt and the 9".

It would depend on what kind of internals you want in the rearend i guess. And if you give him a core unit. I think he uses new axles and posi units from strange or someone big.
Installing a rearend isnt too hard with some help from a friend. I think brakes would be the hardest part.

a proporly built 10 bolt will handle up to 450hp depending on the parts you use and will cost a helluva lot less than a 12 bolt rear.
Traxon rear carrier, with 3.73 gears, 28 spline axles, and a rear diff girdle/cover will do ya just fine.
as to how you broke the pinion gear, pretty simple, something wasnt right, and over time it killed it, how exacty did it break?? if you just lost some teeth, then it just wasnt lined up right and in the process of binding it ate up some teeth, if its something more serious, id say something else went very wrong.

There were silver dollar size pieces of it lying in the bottom of the housing. The car always had a strange vibration to it at high speeds. We thought it was a bent driveshaft but it wasn't. I also have a Urethayne tranny mount which we thought was allowing more vibration to pass through than normal. Hopefully the next guy sets it up properly.

souns like it was set up with to little clearance, and it flaked off sheets of the pinion geer like making an arrow head. Id say its either a poor unit, or improperly setup, not the fault of a ten bolt rear end.
