1989 Short wheel base chevy

Does anybody know what would be a good price to rebuild an engine for it it's supposed to be a factory crated engine that the original was replaced with. I got a quote of 1850 for rebuilding it. Also what about a site that sells rebuilt engines for it and what would be a good price to take the old engine out and replace it if i went that route. Any info would be appreciated thanks

$1850 is probably about right if you are having it rebuilt by a professional. The rebuild kit itself is probably a couple hundred and with labor and machining(which is expensive, speaking from experience) and labor. Catalogs like jegs or summitracing have crate motors for around $1300 and up. Might want to talk to a gm dealership, they can get you crate motors for your truck and probably at a good price. I don't know what area you are in but I know there are shops around here that sell rebuilt motors for probably around a grand for a 350.

Down here in the dirty south, we can find rebuilds anywhere from $400 to $2000. Ya definently get whachya pay fo' though! And if you come off as an average joe who don't know nothin' 'bout nothin', you can even pay that $2000 and end up missing the motor out of the vehicle that got you there anyhow!!

last I checked crate rebuilds from gm were about 1200

Thanks for the replies. What do you think it should cost to take the old engine out and replace it with a new crated one. Also the original transmission has 198,000 miles on it could i buy anything to extend the life of it

Does anybody know what it'll cost to replace the old engine with a new one and alsois there any thing i can add to the transmission to make it last longer thanks

Ck www.SummitRacing.com for good prices on gm motors. I have used a b&m shift improver kit to save a couple of ailling tranies.This can be found at summit also.A good rule to figure labor is what ever the part costs should not be more than that price for labor.Like 1500. for a motor & about 1500. to do the work.This is just a guesstimatt!!!that ive used to get in the ball park.OH YE stay away from the gm STEALERSHIP I just talked to a guy at work that paid 600 bones for a tune up !!!!What a moron!!!

However, that doesn't mean that although Shop A and Shop B charge the same amount, that Shop A will do just as good of a job as Shop B, or vise versa. You still need to be careful where you decide to take your vehicle. And another thing to remember, just because a shop has that "ASE Certified" sign on the front of their building does not mean the people who will be servicing your vehicle are ASE Certified. The owner of the shop and lets say the shop foreman could be the only ones who are ASE Certified while the mechanics who actually do the work aren't. Not saying this is a common thing but it's possible. What is more likely is finding someone that is ASE Certified who doesn't know jack compared to someone who is not ASE Certified. I am not ASE Certified (and don't care to be) but I have met a few mechanics who were incapable of doing things I that I'm capable of, don't know some of the most basic &#*^ about automobiles, or who take 6 hours to do something that should only take 3 hours. Bottom line is you get what you pay but don't just trust anybody.

Oh yeah, regarding dealerships (or I guess "stealerships") although it will be very expensive compared to Shop A or B down the road, atleast their "technicians" (not mechanics) are "GM Certified". This is assuming you go to a GM dealership of some sort. The techs may also be ASE Certified as well, who knows, who cares. The fact they are GM certified means they went to school to learn to work on GM vehicles ONLY. Those technicians are gonna know EVERYTHING about your motor $ transmission. And more than likely they will have many if not all GM specialty tools. And like acewelderman said, "GOOD wrenches don't come cheap!"

Dont expect to poke a big dog & not get bit!! I have put in motors & paid to have it done more than a couple times sorry to say Ive rarly got out for under a grand.Just for instance one of my trucks is at the shop for new heads right now.670.00 parts(new heads)& (11 hours labor)617.00 So I guess my ball park guesstimate wasnt so far off was it ???

2 years back my motor was 895...installation 400

Looks good !!! But its a lot older ie no fuel injection & no computers.Just a MUCH ezyr job altogether.You still got a deal & a nice lookin truck.
