I believe the last time I posted I it was because a mustang GT ran over my headlight covers I just brought and then dusted me, Now thinking back losing to a pony wasnt that bad after all.

But today the worst happen I lost a ungly honda accord it wasn't that I couldn't beat it. Once again I fell flat on 90mph. Is this usually with stock 305tbi and how much horse power does it have stock. I believe my transmission is not switching into the gears like it should. I know it jerks when I go in to reverse. Its very dependable but slow. Any advice...Here is a picture of the poor thing.

Very nice, clean lookin car there man.. A lot of threads comin up recently about 305's
Do a search for 305 performance and you'l find all your answers..

I guess the first thing is headers, exhaust, and intake..

If its a TBI its got
170hp@4000
255ft.lbs@2400

For the TPI was
205@4200
285@3200

And the G92 TPI's were
230@4200
300@3200
(had a more agressive cam)

the 400r4 and 700r4 auto transmissions will not shift into overdrive(4th) gear at wide open throttle, and if the detent cable isnt setup right then it might not shift gears at all at WOT

EDIT: you should take a look at thirdgen.org , the best place ever for thirdgens, tech articles have something about adjusting detent cable if that happens to be a problem

those 305s can scream if you work em. heads, manifold, cam, headers, exhaust, intake, and they will move. there's a lot more you can do but i dont remember everything. when you run a search look for 92RS's posts. he had his 305 killin back when he was postin...

Does this sound like the TV detent cable? If i'm going about 40mph and then I decide to floor the pedal..It takes about 4 sec for the engine to respond. Then it jerks forward in to the next gear? How does racing in drive compare to Overdrive.

i guess it could be a cable problem, either way you should fix that anyways, but the difference between driving in drive and overdrive is nothing except top speed, and your car probobly has the 2.73 rear end gear ratios so top speed in third gear would be reached because of lack of power, so its probobly pointless.

some people say that it shifts faster in drive then overdrive, but i think that is bs...

I have the same car as you and i know what you mean. Ive asked how to get more power for my car also so just go and search the thread for 305tbi and youll find alot of stuff. The main thingns ive been hearing to do to my ride is of course the whole dump the 305 and get a 350 but if you want to keep the 305 you can get World Products Torquer 305 heads. Edelbrock Performer Intake manifold, and a Holley 670cfm TBI. open element air cleaner. Edelbrock TES headers, hi-flow cat, and 3" flowmaster.Trans-go shift kit w/ corvette 1st to 2nd servo.3.73 gears and from what i heard that will get you around the 12's-13's range in a quarter mile

Welcome to the world of owning a 6 cylinder. My friend had one for a couple years and all he did was get busted on.

i dont remember if you said anything about what you already done to the car, i see the flowmaster but thats it. My brother has a 1991 rs convertable. the thing would have the worst throttle response ever, even in nuetral. He put a high flow filter on it and it opened it up alot..., then tried to flip the lid upside down(oldschool trick) but the hood doesnt close then.

but basically what im trying to say is if you dont already have one, then get the open air intake...

try this also (http://www.thirdgen.org/newdesign/tech/tbi-afpr.shtml)

also try the other ultimate tbi tech articles at the site above...

Just curious- what distance were you running? Was it a standing quarter or a duel at freeway speed for flat out top end? Did the thing have you the entire distance or catch up to you?

My tranny is a TH 400 and and will "thwunk" into gear from neutral as it mates up with the engine speed and brings it down. If there ain't much you can do $$wise flush trans, change filter if it's never been done- 50,000 miles or more- and use B & M Trick Shift. It WILL make it shift better if there's no real problem.

Thanks everyone one for the information. I will start off simple changing transmission oil, looking at the TV cable and invest in intake system. As for when I was racing I was ahead of him when I smashed out If I would have kept accelerating he would not have caught me but instead I fell flat on 90 and he slowly began to pass me. By the way it does seem to shift faster in drive then overdrive.

Oh yeah can mess up the transmission shifting from Overdrive to drive while driving? I have heard about racing starting out 1 then 2 and then switching to drive.

on a stock engine, if your tv cable is properly adjusted and your tranny is in good health, shifting manually can actually hurt performance.. With that TV cable properly adjusted, at WOT your tranny should be shifting exactly when it should to stay in the power band... When shifting manually, you might hold it too long, or shift too soon..

and your tranny wont shift any differently in O/D or D

sounds like a TV cable adjustment is in order. I redid the adjustment on my IROC and it made a helluva difference. The car ran like shit before, i did the adjustment and left rubber in the driveway. but ive also got the 350. The 305's are boat anchors in my humble opinion. especially if youre lookin at top end. You can certainly mod it up for more power, but the money would be better spent on a 350. just my two cents.

I think I adjusted the TV cable I removed the air cleaner and held the metal tad in and moved the cable housing up and it made about three click sounds then I pulled the throttle level all the away down a few times then adjusted it again then it made one more click.

somethin about that dosnt sound right. If you are under the hood, you should be able to push the tab in and let the donkey dick out a ways then get in the car, and floor the gas pedal, you should hear the sound similar to a zip tie as you press the gas down, and then you should be done.

thats the clicks he's talking about, sounds right...\

just dont attempt to adjust it too much, if you break it(15 years of crappy plastic makes it easy), its either replace the cable or get a fitzall cable end(hard to find)
