I have a 99 Silverado single cab Z71 4x4 5.3
My truck make this horrible squeeking noise coming from under the hood. I have replaced the idler and tensioner pully this weekend and the squeek did not go away it just changed pitches. Does anyone know what it could be? I am wondering if it is the water pump and if so how do I tell? It does not run hot or anything. Idleing the truck does not make a noise but as soon as I press the gas it starts making this horrible noise. I went to the car wash and while the truck was running I let water run on the belt and the squeek went away but as soon as I gave it gas it started to squeek again.
If it is the water pump how hard of a job is it to replace the water pump.
Thanks,

could also be the alternator

If you have AC it could be that belt, it is separate from the serpentine.
To change the water pump, you will have to take the front of the engine off eg. fan shroud, fan, belts, housing for the pump, then the pump itself.
I would think though, if the water pump was going bad it would squeak constantly. Unless the RPMs are too low at idle to do so.

A few months ago mine started squeaking and I found out it was the alternator. After about 2 weeks of normal driving it stopped. Glad it did b/c I didn't want to buy a new alternator..

i had the same exact problem not too long ago, i thought it was the alternator or the tension pully. Mine was only squeeling in the wet and humid weather. It turns out that it was the waterpump. The bearings went bad on it and was causing the wheel to spin a little wobbly, this then caused my belt to fly off while i was driving down the expressway causing my steering to go out and my truck to overheat.
To replace it is just what nineball said, you gotta take all that shit out, i had to take out my FIPK as well for a little more room.
