noob moment...

Well, I thought I was doing so well on my box... precision cutting all the panels, measuring everything to the 1/100th of an inch, test fitting everything. Then I cut 15" diameter holes in the front panels. Gah... when I looked at the schematics of my sub, it looked like I would have a 1/2" overlap on both sides, but nooooo... it included the rubber gasket, which is about a 1/2" bigger overall than the metal outer diameter. Now I got almost an 1/8th of an inch for the rim to sit on, and I can see the floor through all the screw holes. Fortunatly, I have an extra panel I saved for just something like this, so I won't have to make any trips to Home Depot again.

Story to take home: never assume dimensions based off company schematics. ALWAYS measure everything.

ive never seen a company that give false cut out diameter. most are usually 1/16-1/8 too small so you dont make that mistake. i will make a hole the perfect size for the woofer the test fit it and it will need about another 1/16th to get it in there perfectly snug so i run the jig saw around there 1/2 blade with at a time untill it fits perfect.

well, I never got a cutout diameter... I just made the bad assumption that I would need a 15" hole, and the width I saw on the diagram seemed to support it. Ah well, live and learn I guess.

I've cut a 1/2" ring off the circle that fell out, so I'm hoping it will be enough to support the sub. I'm gonna glue it heavily into place, as well as screw it in. Oh yeah, I'm doing 2 layers, so it'll be sitting on a panel with a properly sized hole.

Rip the first panel off ;)

Then put the correct panel on, and the mess up over top of it...and you got a flush mount baffle :)...if only it were so easy!

I cut them seperately actually, so no ripping necessary. I guess I could flush mount it, but what would that do for strength?

Flush mounting is pimp...if you have it like that...DO IT!!!!

The front baffle as a whole...with be just as strond with less flex!

really... well, if I did it that way, I'd have to cut a bit more out of the hole, and like I said somewhere else, I'm gonna have LED's in the places where the guy before me drilled holes in the rubber gasket. So yeah, I think it'll be cool looking and I hope as strong. How would it have less flex? I'm guessing it has something to do with where the forces are applied.

go get a strip of 1/2" plywood. if its long enough it bends pretty easy. now put another 1/2" strip on top of it. its twice as hard to bend. same thing applies to MDF and your baffle. plus flush mount with some wood covering the screws on the basket makes it alot more secure agiasnt theft.
