well i went to my boys house to play some pool, and when i got there a guy tells me he wants to race, i told him he was :screwy: because it was raining, well he says his stang would whip my maro, well he was drunk so i let him talk and he said his 1987 5.0 stang was pushing out 325hp with just CAI, i asked him what he ran in the 1/4 and he said he was running high 15's i told him he was bullshitting but he wants to race for money now, so my question is how much hp is the 87 5.0 pushing?

Depending on driver and tranny choice, yeah. That's ususally the average, with the frequent freaks.

Well, boys as much as i hate to say, the 1987 was a big jump in horsepower and torque, however it ranged depending on which engine, (as you all know there is the high output 5.0).The high output 302 used hydraulic roller cam and rocker arms, between the years of 87-92, and also used forged pistons. Now ,these engines were rated at 225hp and 300lbft of torque. The base 5.0 was 205hp and 275lbft of torque. these came in most of your lx models,( except for a few, like my 92' )now, in 1993, they switched to hyper"pukes", which actually lowered the horsepower in the gt's to 215hp. the cobra had a fairly modified 245hp, 310lbft of torque.

in answer to your question though, it depends. the stock tbi engines in the firebirds and camaro's were rated at only 170hp.trust me when i say this, they were slow...i traded mine for my mustang. however, that all switched when the lt1 came out.if you have the lt1 in your car, fuel injection system and all, you would smoke it. my 92 has a trickflow upper lower, mass air flow, 373's, a "hot" aod trans, w/ b&m, full exhaust, and i can't break the 15 to 14 second barrier. now that sucks. you firstly need to realize that 15's ain't fast. and as long as you can beat "tuner" cars with 5ft spoilers and big a-- fart cans, then that is all that matters in life. :grinno:

smokey, if your maro really has everything you say, it should be in the mid 13's. you should not be worrying about that

oh yeah i also have a k&n filter on my stang, not that that really matters.and a"little" bit bigger fuel injectors

Which car?

Stang should be mid 11s.
GTR stock with a boost controller low 12s
Project car should be mid 9s, with a little luck
Boss 302 low 13s
GTSt in high 13s

You know what i think we got off at a wrong start lets start over, well what did you do to your stang to get it into the 11s, i'm planning on doing either turbo or supercharge my maro, but i'm leaning more towards the turbo i think that should get me into the mid 11's

I have a friend with a 93 Camaro, and he is fighting for traction, and has yet to break into the 13s.

LT1 is a good engine, but as far as boost it depends on what comp ratio you are at?

I run an S-Trim on the Stang, but you can always get more power/torque from a turbo.

What cam are you running?

SMOKEY818

it's a stock cam, but i'm going to get in a month the lt4 hotcam, and tell your buddy to get the full hotchkis suspension that should help out with traction, i always wanted a supercharger but i realized you can get more hp/torque from turbos

What are the specs of the LT4 cam?

Whats your comp ratio?

@ .50 218 intake, 228 exhaust
lift 525 (with 1.6 rockers)
lobe sep 112deg
compression is @ 10.5 to 1

That's just it, the cam is more suiting for a supercharger, but your comp ratio is a little too high for boost, so you have to change some internal out, or go aftermarket head with bigger chambers. Turbo cams should have a wider lob sep. I will be running 114, some guys run as much as 117.

I would think either N2O, or start saving for some new heads to lower the com ratio would be the best route.
