Ok so I discovered my differential bearings in my y1 tranny were going bad while I was pulling it off to put in my new clutch and flywheel, which I'll post in a different thread once I get around to do is. So today I pulled the trans apart to get it ready for the new bearings, and possibly a new LSD differential, not sure if i can afford it yet. Once I'm all done I'll put together a nice write up for future reference. Heres the pics so far.
Inside of the casing - look closly at all the shavings on the magnetic strip, thats whats left of the bearings

Gears - seem to be in good shape

Differential gears seem to be good too

The good bearing

The bad bearing, missing half the balls.

The CRACK in the bearing housing - dirt most have gotten in and seized it up or something and caused it to crack.

For those of you who don't know, this ring should NOT be able to come off the bearing, notice the crack again.

Side shot of the bearings, noticed how pitted the balls and the race are. The other half of the bearings are MIA.

Thats all the pics. Im thinking either the differential or the crack is what chewed up all the bearings, so im thinking about ripping apart my S1(ls) trans and using the diff from it and just swapping the Y1(b16) final drive on it and using the bearings as well, i was told the bearings are the same and I know the S1 bearings are in good shape, no play or anything.

Boy, that looks like lots of fun. I might have to tear into this extra hf tranny I've got and see what I can learn about the inner workings of a tranny.

if you are useing the final drive from the b16, does that mean that your gonna use the other gears from the ls tranny???? :banghead:

Im glad you put this thread up man. Its cool for a lot of people to actually get a good look into a manual transmission. To be honest, they really arent that hard to work on. You agree hybrid? once you look at them and understand how they work, its pretty basic. But yea, your not gonna be able to reuse that diff. Good luck with the rebuild man.

Replace the input shaft bearing while your in there.
I agree, they look a lot more complicated than they are.
Automatic trans valve bodies are what gets me. How in the hell did some one figure that out way back when?

Yeah they aren't really that hard, people just get scared of them because they look some complicated with all the small parts. But I don't see a problem with the diff, the gears seem to be in good shape, i dont see any chips in them, all i need to do is get that race off the output shaft and put on a new bearing. Still might just use the LS diff and the bearings on it, they are in good shape. And to answer anthony90si's question, no im not going to use the ls gears im just using the diff out of it.

I'm surprised nobody has made a "Your car only has half the balls mine does" joke. :)
