I've just bought a 1985 chevorlet pickup. For 1000 a steal with the condition that its in it's already been sanded and primed and ready for a paint job. New transmission still under waranty. But the engine is not the stock engine it's a big 350 v8 i don't know what year it was but supposedly it's been rebuilt. I noticed when i started it up there that it was making some sort of clicking sound like a rods messed up but i figured for a grand its worth it. Does anyone else know what that sound might be when i rev it up you can't hear it and when i let off of the gas it stays the same doesn't speed up or anything. I was wondering if anybody thought it could be something else thanks

So the sound doesn't change speed with engine RPM? If I understand correctly, it's not the engine. Try to find where the sound is coming from.

hmmm...if it is the engine though, try to listen under the hood to see where it is coming from. My 86 with the 305 and who knows how many miles on the engine makes a clicking noise from the engine compartment at idle when the engine is cold. It is lifter noise on mine which I can understand because I know that the motor is on its way down. When you rev it up the sound disappears and then goes away when warmed up.

J-Ri, I like your 86. Mines a little rustier and red and I got a lot of plans for it too.

Yeah, it sounds like a tappet click, nothing to worry about. If it was a rod, the noise would speed up and get worse as the RPM's went up.

And welcome to the forums!

One other thing I was thinking of is a tiny hole in the exhaust. If yours has A.I.R. installed on it, check around the tubes where they go into the intake manifold. Mine started getting really rusty, and eventually holes started. I just cut the tubes off, welded the holes shut, and took off the pumps and all the tubing.

Thanks. I have my share of rust too though, Mostly on the passenger side. Also, my tailgate hinges rusted through. There's a dent 4 inches deep in the passenger side front fender, door, rear cab section, and the front of the bed (I tried driving while straddling a rut made by ATVs, and slid the passenger side in, had to back up 50 feet draging the side). I have at least 30 pencil diameter chips in the paint that have rusted. But, she's my baby :)
