Job Selection

What would you rather choose:
1. Doing what you love for small money all your live and progress up.
2. Get a job that pays more, screw if you like it or not.

I am going with choice 1, I am going to be a mechanic. My whole life since I was like 4, I have been doing something with my bike, or my toys. I actually spent more time fixing, improving and rebuilding the bike then riding it. I love when I am all dirty, doing what I love.
I also read an article written by a Russian philosopher saying that people who choose a job for money never have them. While people who do what they love progress up and become successful and rich.

I just wanted to ask what other people think about this, and which route are you choosing/chose.

i love money, so I just want to get paid alot.... bust my ass during the day but enjoy my cash at night. Work hard and play hard.

Most people will prolly disagree with that, but i just love money lol so i need a job that deals with money, like banker, stockbroker, financial advisor. Something like that.

I actualy have a shitty job which pays little.
However, if I could choose, I'd live with a heavy breasted woman who also happened to be a brain surgeon, who really wanted to support me while I lay about the pool drinking whiskey, eating snot, and cutting the cheese......Sigh, Oh well........

Licensed mechanics get paid pretty decent don't they?

Besides, if you do something you hate it will spill over into your personal life. I have been there and I don't advise it. I would feel ill every day on my way to work and bring home the anger I felt every night. Fortunatly I don't have to do that any longer. I am at a job I like and the pay is good.

nah i picked #2... cause i love money, so i want a job that deals with money. I dont know if i'll like it tho...

Go for satisfaction first, money AND satisfaction later.

1. happiness means alot!money is good too, but there are plenty of miserable rich people. not to many people that like there job and are miserable!

I would start off with option 2, just so I could save up enough money to get into the career field I want to be in. But for a lifetime, I wouldnt do something I dont wanna do. Just for a while until I can afford to get out of it.

Im going to take all the money I can afford to spend, and get certified in fiberglass, paint, and car stereos, so I can do what I love doing.. working on cars. Then Im going to do that while going to college to get a business degree so I can eventually own my own business customizing cars. So I guess I wouldn't mind option 2 if I had it, but only so I could get to option number 1 faster.

Id have to go with number one, I rather get less pay for doing something i like then get more for something i dont. The reason behind it is your more misirable with the other job even if you have cash.

#1 most definitely. If you enjoy what you do, you will be good at it.

I recall reading several years ago, a survey of Harvard business school grads from the 70s. Out of 100 in the class, 20 had become millionaires 20 years later. Of those 20, only 1 had gotten there by getting the high paying job; the other 19 had pursued what they loved.

This is going to sound odd to some of you but sometimes you may choose to take a crappy job right now so long as you can fulfill the goals you want to achieve in the longer term.

In a world of instant gratification and living in the now, it's almost a quaint notion that sometimes that you have to do some hard yards of slog to get where you want to go. So long as you don't do it forever and you balance some of the other things that you don't get out of work in other parts of your life.

In the last couple of weeks, I've had some opportunities to reflect on what I have achieved and there are jobs where I wasn't satisfied by my job ie I didn't feel compelled to leap out of bed and head off eager to work each morning. But even the shitty jobs served a purpose, they were either a means to an end or they funded some of the things that were important to me.

I've driven trucks, waited tables, poured cocktails, dug holes, worked in a retail sales, stacked crates in a warehouse, poured concrete foundations, painted buildings, worked as a cashier, mopped floors and cleaned bathrooms in my time to pay the bills along the way to fund my education and pay for my holidays - which all contributed to becoming an exec with the house by the beach, the shiny SUV, the overseas travel, skiing/diving/sailing etc.

Some of those jobs have given me skills for life - working in a retail shop, waiting tables and pouring drinks in a bar will teach you a lot about people - including how to upsell, present yourself and project confidence and knowledge... stuff I have to do every day in management meetings and presentations.

As one of my mentors once said to me... lots of folk slam the door on opportunities to try things because he turns up on Saturday morning at 6am in dirty overalls and with the very real prospect that hard work is involved.

On the other hand, I've sailed a yacht in a National Series (which the crew won), worked on race cars, even had a hand in building a couple, skiied, qualified as a master diver and instructor, climbed mountain summits, seen places and experienced stuff that less than 0.01% of the world's population will ever do because I've jumped at most opportunities and done some hard work...

The guy who I mentioned earlier said that people who choose a job for money and to just have enough for living usually what they get. While when a person likes the job they chose, you will try harder, get better and move on to higher and higher levels. In the End you will end up happy, have money and will never regret anything. Basically if you go with choice 1, you will be a happy man or woman.

I cannot understand why anyone would opt to stick with a job simply because it pays well although they wake up every day dreading to go to work. People like that in my opinion are the ones we see during rush hour cutting you off, not letting you in thier lane when you actually use your blinker, or the people who are over demanding on request to those who cater/wait on them, the people who take a penny but are too good to ever leave a penny, etc., etc.. In otherwords: hateful people- they live to hate. Maybe they are so hateful because they hve learned to hate thier job.

Me on the other hand, I just wish that big phat check would hurry up and get here for all the hard work I've enjoyed doing! In a way, being able to wake up every day, happy, is almost payment in itself! Note that I did say ALMOST

You should do what you enjoy and if you're good at it, the money will come. Thats not to say you won't have to work your ass off or that the job will be easy - just something that you enjoy doing.

If you're going to spend 40-60 hours (or whatever) a week doing something, you'll quickly tire of working your ass off at something you don't like.

well iwork a job that i hate. and the more the days that go by the more i get stressed. the more i get stressed the more i hated being stressed. I only do it because it pays good and i have needs. Sometimes the weekends and money overcome he stress but lately it hasn't which is why i am leaving that place as of 4/1/05. I need a better job with less STRESS. it makes me hate wakin up. I hate people there and iv'e been restless for a year now.

I would have to choose both.

I wouldnt work in a job where I didnt enjoy and I wouldnt work for anything less than I deserved.

I dont get paid well for the job that I do(helicopter mechanic) But being in the military fills me with a sense of pride that very few well paying jobs can povide.

This is a really good topic. This actually came into my life within the past month. I have been working in the computer industy for about 5 years now. Went to college for it got all my certs the whole 9 yards. Making killer money I can't complain at all. But there is just somthing missing. I love cars always working on them, I have had 7 since I started driving buliding and selling them..I just cant see myself sitting in the office at my desk till I am 65. I recently decided I want to join an automotive school and get my license and hopefully take that somewhere. Maybe open my own shop or start a drag team..I will be making far less money but I will enjoy what I am doing..Why sit at work all day just to want to go home to play with your car when you can be playing with cars all day and getting paid..SO I would have to say I choose #1 from your list..
