hey all, i just wanted to say thanks for all the help youve given me in the past. But now im back, and i have a bit of a problem. I have a 2000 VW Golf 2.0 GLS w/ 85k miles on it. Great car, just getting a bit worried because it seems as though Im burning oil...I use mobil syntec. and a good filter, but ever time i check my oil its always low. I add oil as needed. Im estimating it burns oil at about a 1.5 quarts every 3k miles. Theres no CEL light or anything. I just replaced my mass airflow sensor about 1.5 months ago. I drive my car pretty hard...im a delivery guy, so you can imagine. Anyways, any ideas about what the problem could be would be greatly appreciated.

Also one more thing, im approaching the 90k mark and would like to know what you all recommend be done at this service interval. I need this car to last a while, so i'd rather be safe than sorry.

Again, any replies would be greatly appreciated.

First off, any car you drive hard will burn more oil than normal. VW says that .8qts 3000 miles is ok on a 2.0. 2.0's are very dirty running cars and they burn the most oil of any other vw engine. High speed driving 80+ or extended highway driving also causes oil to burn faster than normal. VW reccomends a oil change and tire rotate at 90K. At the 80K interval they reccomend the same stuff at a 40k ( oil, filter, air filter, fuel filter, pollen filter, spark plugs, rotate.) If you havent changed your filters and plugs recently (past 20K) then you should try that.

in regard to the burnt oil: other than changing driving habits a bit...is there anything i can check? A friend who works japanese cars said that valve seals or piston rings are a possible culprit...is there any validity to what he has told me?

In regard to the maint. What about transmission fluid (automatic;:-() or coolant or any of that other stuff.

Thanks

Hey mate .. my name is Jon too :p

I've heard these engines burn oil also, but I haven't noticed much of a problem myself .. perhaps as the miles creep up I'll notice it more.

I've got an mk3 Golf, but the same engine as you so maintenance is probably the same.

My Bentley manual actually has 30K intervals for OBDI cars, and then 10/20/40K intervals for OBDII engines. So if you've done the 80K maintenance, you should only have to do the typical 10K maintenance at 90K miles - Oil+oil filter, top off fluids, dust/pollen filter, brake check etc.

I'll be hitting 80K miles myself this summer, although other than checking brakes and getting new spark plugs I'm not sure what all I might need to do (oil/air filter are new enough).
Would new plug wires be recommended, or only if I'm having trouble? The car has been flawless with the exception of a single coolant leak in nearly 2 years since I bought it used.

vw doesnt reccomend changing any other fluids untill 100K accept brake fluid (2yrs 24k) But a trans flush every 40k would be very very helpful. Coolant flush- not really needed because when the water pump breaks or ect goes bad you practically get a coolant flush with the amount of fluid that is lost. There have been SOME incidents where at the factory they put the piston rings in incrrectly so the gaps line up and it burns oil but that is normally 1-3qts every 1000 miles. Valve seals and rings wont go bad on a 2.0 for at least 200k miles.
