I have a 95 jeep cherokee (6cl) and wish to replace the origional 4speed auto and synchro transfer case with ones out of a 1998 model. Will there be a problem with the wireing, and is there any other advice anyone has got. Thankfully Brian.

I could be wrong but, I think the trannys from 1991-1996 will only bolt up to ur motor I don't think a 97-01 will fit...

I think your right; I talked with some people and found that the trans will fit to the engine, however the transfer case on the 95 is longer (its extended at the rear) than the 98 therefore the 98 has a longer drive shaft( their similar animals but not the same! ).
Thanks for your help, Brian

Hmmm... I find that fact to be a bit odd. I am running a 94 xj AX-15 behind the 4.0 in my 97. That obviously leads me to believe that the newer tranny will bolt to the older motor.
You say the t-case is longer on the older version, causing the d-shaft to be shorter? And?
Just extract the shorter driveshaft as well. Presto. Or even better, purchase an NP231 Slip Yoke Eliminator kit, and reuse the driveshaft you have.

Thanks for the advice, your right the older engine will fit the transmission. And your on the money with the driveshaft (good advice thanks) , however the 98 tranfer case may use different sensors (more and in different locations on the transfer case) in the wireing than the 95.

Hi, From what I understand they are the same transmission (4speed auto). However, the 97 and up transmissions, although they will bolt up to your engine, have a small two wire plug on the front driver side of the transmission that is located just above the transmission pan. This is for a lock up convertor that the earlier transmissions don't have.
I hope this helps.
Thanks
