Coil or Fuel Problem?

I have a 2000 LS V8. 76k miles on it. I have read through some of the threads that sound like my problem, but would like a little more info if anyone has anything to offer. Sounds like it could be the coils, but maybe it really is a fuel issue or both???

About 2 years ago I started to have a minor problem around 1500 rpm in the mornings. Very very minor, but was watching it. Then it would go away after warmed up. Last July I got a bad batch of gas in the desert from one station. Many people did. I almost didn't make it home. The check engine light came on and then went out. I get the stumble still at 1500 rpm, but now it is when the car is warm. I get the stumble very badly under load as in going up a hill. But it always smooths out on the down hill or regular roads. I have changed my fuel filter every few months (at the same time I change the oil). Have put in the fuel additives to clean out the water, etc. The car runs great for a time and then when they are out.... the problem returns. On the open road or freeways it runs like a dream, but have noticed that gas mileage is down. I have also noticed that weather seems to affect performance.

Today it is rainy and cool for California. I started my LS and it idled rough, smoothing out after 1500 rmp. Then the check engine light came on and stayed on. The car never over heats. I really like the car and how it performs, but need to get this addrssed.

Husband and sons are handy and have tools. Any suggestions??

Thank you in advance.

if the CEL, check engine light, is still on stop by an autozone and ask them to read the PCM. They will do it free of charge. Take a notepad and write down any DTC, diagnostic trouble codes, and post them back here asap.

We can come to a reasonable answer much quicker with the DTC(s)

Sorry to hear about the problems. Most problems with this car are predictable and common so the solution might be somehting your testosterone charged DIYers can handle for you.

All the trouble started with the "desert gas"? What was the nature of the "badness"? dirt/silt/sand? If so, there's a good chance that either the inlet screen on the pump is blocked or the pump has been damaged by grit and can't supply enough pressure under load.

Do you have any recourse with the station in question?

It could also be as simple as a failed O2 sensor. That could send erroneous information to the computer and cause all sorts of drivability issues...

Like El Es said, you need to find what the DTCs are and move from there...

Sounds like coils to me. My wife's had the same problem and it ended up being one coil. Smooth all the time now.
