battery acid problem

Do any of you guys have any problems with battery acid leaking onto wires and hoses below? I have a 1996 blazer and the battery leaks onto some wires and hoses. I have cleaned the terminals but it doesnt do much. I am not to sure what the wires and hoses go to. There is a connector that is right below the positive terminal that is being melted by the acid. It has a small red wire that connects into the postive terminal. So if you could tell me what that connector might be I would appreciate it. There is also some hoses that have melted. I think they are vacuum hoses. There is 3 of them that connect at a TEE connector but one is disconnected because it melted. I think they are for the 4wd but it still works so I am not sure. One last thing have any of you converted to a top post battery because these side terminals suck!! If so is it difficult to rewire. Sorry for the long post. Thanks for any help.

Just replace the battery.

The red wire going to the battery is probably the alternator charging wire.

But again, change the darn battery instead of cleaning the terminals which will do nothing.

A battery leaking all over everything is not normal, you should address this issue, before fixing the other stuff or it will just get messed up again.

I agree with blazee, it could either be the battery, or it could be an electrical issue causing the battery to be overcharged, which in turns leads to boiling. You might want to check the charging system, to ensure it's not overcharging.

Let the engine run and take a voltmeter out and test the charging voltage.

Should be in the 14.4volt range

I am going to replace the battery but I would also like to fix the hoses and wires that got messed up. The red wire I am talking about is separate from the alternator wire. It goes into a wiring loom by the passenger fender then who knows where from there. The charging system is ok. Right around 14volts. The reason I want to change the cables is because the terminal is corroded. One last thing was i right about those hoses being for the 4wd. Thanks for the help

Just making sure, to try to help you, by asking you about the system voltage. Overcharging can lead to battery boiling. But it sounds like you have already made sure that your charging system is OK.

Yeah I just checked it and its at 14 volts So I guess its not overcharging. I will just change the battery But do you think I should change the cable becuse the terminal is corroded? Thanks again for the help

Did you use a voltmeter to test the voltage?

Yeah I used a voltmeter and it was 14.05 volts.

Ok, I would say you should replce the battery before you start worrying about cable repair.

Repair what is causing the damage first before you repair the damage it created.

Yeah that is what I was going to do replace the battery first then the corroded cable. By the way does anyone know what that connection I was talking about go to. I cant figure it out. Its not the alternator wire. Thanks again
