i have a carbed 1500 87 crx and i was wondering what the normal opperating temp is.
in the service manual, it says this:
18. Start engine and warm up to normal opperating tempurature; the cooling fan will come on.
this can be seen here:

my cooling fan comes on when the temp gauge is at 3/4.
any insight would be great.

the cooling fan should come on when the engine starts to heat up like in traffic or whenever there isn't any airflow thru the rad. 3/4 does sound kind of high tho. the fan is controlled by a heat sensitive switch in the rad, it can be replaced. you can also simply disconnect the two wires from the switch and attach them together to make the fan run all the time if you are having trouble keeping things cool. i've had mine like that for a couple years now without any trouble.

I recently replaced my bad fan thermostat when I winterized my car. Before I replaced it I had a jumper between the terminals to the fan so it would run constantly. Wired like this the temp gauge was at about 3/4 the way up. After I replaced it there was no difference, it was still at about 3/4. Before I put the jumper in to bypass the fan thermostat, the car would usually stay in the 3/4 range and occasionally it would get in the red. I guess that since I don't have overheating problems anymore, anything up to about the 3/4 mark is normal.

mine sits at about 1/4 in my 83. if it goes above 1/2 it usually menat it was going to redline pretty soon.

I"m having the exact opposite prob in my 86 crx si.........it likes to stay COLD and very rarely even hits half...lucky if it even sees quarter...any ideas?being that its fuel injected, could that cause any extra things to go wrong?

Probably a bad thermostat, Being it's stuck open. I think that's my problem... Haven't replaced it just yet... Still having time problems (not enough hours in a day)... Either that, or your Anti-freeze to Water ratio is not 50:50... Prolly around 80:20. Just a few suggestions. 8)

I would guess maybe a bad temp sensor or gauge.
Especially if you are still getting hot air from the heater.

It's probably not something that needs to be taken care of immediately. If your car is running fine, then don't worry about it just yet.
Oh yeah,

so yeah... i have the same problem, likes to run at about 3/4, checking out stuff under the hood, coolant looks good, and it doesn't seem extremely hot...i'm just worried for the summer months when it's mad hot here, and wondering if it's going to overheat or not :) maybe i need a bigger fan :P

If your fan kicks on when it's fully warmed up then you shouldn't have anything to worry about.
Yet.
