Hey everyone, I'm the new girl on the block! :D
I just purchased a '96 Cavalier from a local dealer, with 204,441 miles on it. I purchased this on 2/16, as of today, 2/20, the miles on the odometer have jumped from 204,441 to 204,640. I have no drove no where NEAR those miles, my job is about 3 miles away. Could there be a mechanical problem with this? Has it been tampered with? Any suggestions on how to fix it?
Any help is well appreciated!

i hope you paid no more than 300 bucks for that car. But that is very stange how it would just jump like that. Did it come with any warenty or does your stare have a lemon law? I would bring it back to them and raise question.

LOL Well I paid more than 300, more like $3000, I was determined to devote time and money, I needed a car. Well the carfax report was clean, it has a 30 day warranty on it, so I guess I'll take it back to the lot I got it from. I believe I'm going to take it to a reputable repair place as well for a second opinion, just in case the dealer tries to swindle me. :D

The teeth on the drive shaft that the VSS read could have some crap around it or the cluster is screwed up. The PCM will revalt the actual mileage if it's not the sensor! Welcome to AF by the way. I and CRJ, the guy with the white gran-mobile! Are always willing to help a lady in distress. Anyone for that matter. 200,000 miles is a LOT. Unles it's had a new motor! Keep an eye on the oil level if it is that high! It will probably drink it. $3000 for it was VERY VERY high.

Yeah I figured it was pretty high, but I plan on putting a new engine in it if need be. I'm trying my best to be very "preventive" with this vehicle, seeing that the average female knows absolutely NOTHING about cars, I'm actually putting forth the effort to learn, and this will be my guinnea pig. LOL Well I will definitely run it by a mechanic about this, who knows how long this problem has been going on, the miles can be entirely wrong. I guess there wouldn't be a way to find out, however the carfax report does confirm it has atleast 200,000 miles on it.

Don't knock the grand-mobile there bud.. just because i have a low milage car and was driving my an old granny b4 dosn't make it a bad car... ur 109+Kmiles compared to my 99 that just about to touch 55K.... Bahahahaa... welcome to AF... this is my $.02 i paid 5999 for a car with 27K miles on it. I think you got ripped off. Thats way too many miles for a car to cost 3K for 200K miles. Ouch...

Yeah there's a fairly good chance I did, but, it's too late to go b*tchin about it now, I just have to fix what's broken, hopefully it's all fixable.

its been 5-6 days. Not even a week. I would file under the lemon law. In NY by law they need to warrenty the car for 90days and you should be still be able to return the car. Its NOT too late. I would go back and tell them you want your money back. I sure as hell would. Well i would have never bought it in the first place. Shit even call the bank and cancel the transfer of money. DO IT NOW!

Well I paid cash for it, so cancelling the transfer is out the window. They gave me a 30 day warranty, not a 90 day. I will check with my state about the lemon laws, I mean I guess it's expected with the year of the model the mileage would be that high. If the odometer was tampered with (which would be beyond me why they would have the miles go up instead of down), then I definitely have a fight, which the vehicle is covered under carfax buyback if the odometer has been tampered with. I really didn't join this forum to be judged, I just wanted to know if it could be fixed. I understand you're "helping" me, and I understand I may have been ripped off, but I've learned to take the good with the bad, especially with cars. LOL But I will take your advice.

I don't mean to judge you in all... but that is such a fuc$in scam right there and you should do somthing about that milage doing that. If your 100% sure about the milage doing that and all... go back and complain their obligated to fix it if you want to keep the car, but personally, i'd get out of it if i was you. If the head gasket on that thing hasn't been replaced yet, you could be in for some hefy repair fees a little way down the road. Cavaliers are good cars, but are know to be problem some with highmilage and repairs qet quite expensive on them if you don't know how to fix them. G'luck with the problems.

LOL, well thanks for the compassion. I'm getting the car thoroughly checked out tomorrow, due to the holiday today. So if all goes well, no major repairs would be needed, but I've learned to expect the unexpected when it comes to cars, especially high mileage cars. I'm thinking, since it use to be a rental car, if the odometer was tampered with to make the mile go up, they more than likely had something to do with it, seeing that rental car companies get more money on higher mileage. I'm such a conspiracy theorist! LOL
