Does anyone know the grounds upon which one can report a company to the Better Business Bureau? What steps should be taken? Your help is appreciated. :)

The only thing I can say is, you have to know what they are doing wrong, and if its bad for business, and then go to fill out a report from there. At least, thats what one of my friends did.

Check out there website at http://www.bbb.com/
You can then click "file a complaint" and there is a couple more links on the side of that page which take you to pages that explain what they DO and DO NOT deal with, and how to go-about filing a complaint.
Hope this helps :)

If you "file a complaint", the BBB will become the middleman to try to settle the dispute -- by letter. This can get very tedious. If the company is a member, the dispute will probably be settled quickly because companies that join the BBB abide by their rules(I'm a member). If the company is not a member of the BBB they can get arrogant and refuse to deal with the situation, in which case the BBB publishes their name saying that. The BBB will also let people know making inquiries about that company, that they have an unsatisfactory rating.

Craig, do you know if they take care of things once a complaint is filed...or does it go in a file and then when there are more complaints then they will look at it? I have always been curious about that.
Dante....if you are making a significant complaint you can also file a complaint with your state's attorney general's office. A few years ago I filed a complaint with them, the BBB, and AAA (roadside assistance) when a tow truck driver carelessly ripped off the front end on Alex's car.

Normally the BBB will pass the complaint letter on to the business and ask them to respond. If there is no response, the business gets an "unsatisfactory" rating with respect to customer complaints(I'm not sure they tell the person this). Most good businesses will respond. The response should be send back to the person if something is still disputed or the business will contact the individual directly to resolve. There may be several rounds of this before the two get together and finally resolve the issue.
The BBB will not give out information on a business based on unsubstantiated complaints.
