I have a 2001 silverado and was thinking of having a whipple supercharger put on it. Will the transmission hold up, and do I have to install a different torque converter? Will the 5.3 hold up to the power gain or will the SC cause problems and end up jacking the engine up. thanks

People on this forum recommend installing a corvette servo on the transmission. A cheap mod at around 20 bucks. I believe that Sloprocess uses the factory transmission on his truck with the servo and a shift kit. His truck is running in the mid/low 12s on the 1/4mile. I'm guessing around 450 RWHP. So as long as I'm right in my guessing it should hold up to the SC as long as you don't go crazy with the boost. Also, I'm sure that if Slo sees this thread he'll help you out too. He certantly knows more about his truck than I do.

With the supercharger and a decent tune on the 5.3L, I think your tranny would last a good while, but you absolutely need the shift kit/servo to keep the tranny shifting firm and going into gear.
I now have a fully built 4l60e from Teamtripp.com. It's the super duty, with everything upgraded(hardened input shaft, raysbestos clutches, etc.) It's made to handle serious horsepower, which is what I hope to make some day.
Concerning the torque converter, you don't necessarily have to change it, but you would see a HUGE benefit from ungrading to a higher stall. You'll make so much more use out of that new found power. Most people see a 1+ sec gain in the 1/4 from just a 3000 stall. It's a great mod to do, and even better when you add alot more power.

Here's a link to the servo install and pretty much sums up the purpose of upgrading to it.

The two I've seen for the 4.3L are the Powerdyne and the Vortech. I know those two for a fact, but I'll have to check on the Whipple. Procharger might make a kit for the 4.3L as well. You can check the net for those two and see if they're offered.

I have a question about the servos that i'm not sure if anyone can answer. In the how to article it says that the vette servo has more surface area, but yet it is smaller. I installed one in my truck and it really works great, but i don't see how it has more surface area. Oh well maybe it's something simple that i'm over looking.
