I have a 89' S-10 Blazer V-6 4.3liter with a rebuilt engine with about 60,000 on it, it has been taken care of regular oil changes etc. well today I was driving down the highway and my“Check gages” light started to flicker on and off...so I look over at my Oil gage and it’s below 40 pounds of pressure? Like about 15 to 20 I am guessing cause it goes 0 to 40 to 80 pounds of pressure on my gage...now first off what is the normal operating pressure anyway??? I keep driving for a bit to see what was going on, I watched my temp and put my windows down to listen to my engine...nothing no knocking and the temp held very steady at 210 which it always dose. I got to were I was going and immediately checked my oil...now when I pulled up the dip stick at the very top to about a quarter of the way down it...(best description) looked as if it was all rusted and mass flaky burnt corrosion and like carbon build up so bad that there were flakes on most the dup stick but not at the very end of it, it was as if it was the first half top of the stick and the dip stick housing so with that said what is it? One and what could cause it? And how can I fix it? I cleaned the dip stick up as good as I could and checked the oil.....well it was “barely” below were it should be in the normal area so I decided I will put a quart in to see how it all works out. Did that ran it and my pressure went up a tiny bit to just 40, were as before all this it ran at about between 40 and 80 so what I need to know is what could it be is my sending unit going bad? But if it was since that is electrical wouldn’t it just work or not work?? Or is it my Oil pump? Or my Oil filter on the pump?? Not sure very lost with this so any answers, suggestions would be great. By the way I run 5w-30 Castrol thanks

Normally at start your gauge will go from 60-80 range, then at warm up it should be around 25-40.... That said, do an oil change, and try switching out the oil sending unit... They tend to go bad frequently...

go with rlith says
i have a 91 4.3 and everytime around a 1000 miles into the change she drop and go all eractic even though stick was good. Head on over to www.lislecorp.com goto engine tools get the socket number then head to ebay get the socket makes the job alot easier. Now when you go to install yours i had my mechanic do mine since i was frustrated your going to have bend it without breaking it. That is his words not mine because as he said the originals arnt the same as the aftermarket ones.
