My Mustangs first Kill...Poor Civic SI..

Hello all, New to the board and new to racing. Just got back from Iraq and the whole time I was over there, this buddy of mine would not stop talking about his GT Mustang... I mean we would be taking fire, shit would be blowing up all around us and still he would not shut up about his "Stang" as he called it. This friend of mine ended up paying the ultimate price, but I never forgot about his stang. When I got back to the land of the Big P/X the first thing I did besides kiss my wife and young son was buy me a completely stock 1993 Ford Mustang GT 5 Speed. I had heard so much about this car from my friend that I had to have one. This car has only 89K miles on it and still has the air silencer in place. After buying the car for only $3800 which I think was a steal, I had all the fluids changed the plug wires and cap replaced the fuel injectors cleaned and replaced the filter.
As I was driving home from the mechanic. I stopped at a light and I was waiting for it to change. A newer model Honda Civic SI pulls up next to me and looks over. I had my windows down as it was a cool day here in South Florida. The driver of the Civic SI yells over to me and asks if the car was stock and how nice it looked after a bit of chit chat he asks you want to run... I said what the hell lets see what this Stang can do. The light changes to green I pop the clutch and take off tires spinning like crazy, the Civic is about a half a car length behind when I try and shift to second and miss it altogether, the car makes a god awful sound then I see the civic pull ahead of me. I find second, and then third and fourth with no problems. The Civic is left looking at my tail lights. By the time I back off in fourth gear at the next light I have him beat by at least two car lengths. We stop at the next light chit chat some more and the civic driver said good race and invited me to race again Saturday night at this gathering of other street racers.
But that is for another post... God I love this Stang, Thank you Sgt. Thomas Grahm USMC.
YOU ARE TRULY MISSED MY FRIEND!!!!

Very good first post here. Welcome to AF. I find it believable that he was able to beat an SI. Nothing wrong with that. Sorry to hear about your buddy there, but don't get too cocky about how great V8's are. Good race, glad you had fun. L8...

thank you very much for serving your country.
I agree, I give all the Army, Navy, Air Force etc guys/girls the highest respect. Thats great you were able to find a race right after you got your Stang, it took me almost a month before someone would run my Camaro. :disappoin

Nice job man, i think you'll also find the Mustang forum very helpful if you want to find out more about what your car can do and what you can do to it. Good luck :bigthumb:

Thank You All,
I look forward to being a part of the Automotive Forums Board and I will keep everyone posted as to the progress of my Stang. I will post some photos as soon as I figure out how. Heading over to check out the Mustang board to see what is up.
Sorry Civic owners if I came off cocky as someone suggested here. I was just really excited about my first race.
Thanks again to everyone!!

Yea I can see that too. all he would talk about was his Stang. He always had copies of Muscle Mustang and 5.0 Super Fords magazines. He waited each month to get these magazines and would read them over and over....
So how could I not get a Mustang..........
I will be adding Gears and exhaust this week. I am trying to decide whether or not to go with 3:55 or 3:73 I have been told that 4:11 are the way to go. Also which exhaust is better MAC or Flowmaster.
I plan to head to the track after gears and exhaust to see what she will run in the quarter.
Any ideas?

Well I honestly know really little about those fox body mustangs, but I've heard that 3:73s would be a better way to go than 4:11...someone who actually knows what they are talking about should step in now...

Yeah..theres no 4.11 gearing for the 8.8" rear. But. 4.10 is where it's at if you're staying naturally aspirated. 3.55s would be a waste. You'd hardly notice it. 3.73s would be good..but 4.10s would be better. You can shave up to 5 tenths off your 1/2 with 4.10s. And they damn sure throw you back in your seat.

The 5.0 motor is pretty torquey in stock form(300 ft pnds), so i'd go with 3:55's. My buddy did 3:73's, the car just cooks the tires/clutch now. And maybe try Magnaflow muffs for your exhaust, with a pro 5.0 chamber for your crossover. DEFFINETLY do headers, Ford's shorty's are affordable and flow well, but can be a little of a pain to install due to the tight spaces near the mounting flanges. Just some helpfull thoughts. At any rate, welcome to the forum man!

Oh yeah, one more thing. You WILL need a high perfomance clutch such as a King Cobra if you plan to mod your car passed 235 hp (stock is 225). Ford in all it's wisdom put in a stock clutch that can handle a whopping 15 more hp and torque than stock. Gotta love the blue oval, heh.

Also, we do appreciate your service to our country and i hold all the branches with tremendous respect. Hopefully you'll be on the roads and on AF for a very long time, and is that the 5.0l stang?

I'd honestly recommend 3.73's as the car is still streetable. If you put in 4.10's you'll be in for a world of hurt on freeway noise, as your car will have alot of engine drone. Gears are only part of the equation though. You need to look into some drag radials. Heat those suckers up good, and prepare to do alot of quick shifting. Good luck

I would go with a 3:73 setup to, and maybe some trick flow stuff...intake, heads...and get some headers

I'd have to disagree with the 3.55s not making a difference. Remember that the 5.0 had stock 2.73 gears in the back and that's a fairly big jump.
When dad was going to change gears he was thinking about 3.73s but didn't know if they'd be the best for highway use. He finally went with the 3.55s when he saw the Mach 1s and 2003 Cobras had them. I've been able to tell a very huge difference since they have been changed. I'd suggest these gears for anybody unless their car was going to be nothing but a weekend toy, then I'll say 4.10s

4.10s are fun, they come stock on gen 1 Lightnings, and they really help excelleration from our "measly" 240hp. Oh yea, 1993_GT come check out to NLOC.net, not about mustangs, but we'd be glad to have you post there if you want(the gen 1 Lightning was made to be a mustang gt with a cargo bed).

Welcome, one thing new racer, be safe out there.
Hey, got to love that sound of the 5.0 motor.
First thing first, if you have a man trans get 3.73 gears or 4.10 gear in an automatic.
Second, Long tube headers with cold air intake, that well get that off line torque.
Third, Nitto 555 R compound dot street slicks.
You will run 13.8 in the 1/4 mile with those options.

Your starting to hurt my feelings, My Mach 1 employ the uses of those time wasting 3.55 gears. And I spin these Goodyear’s ZR’s from 1 thru 3 with out trying. As from the new guy with the 5.0, if you put the 4.10s on you will be wasting soo much gas, it wouldn’t be funny. If it your everyday driver, go with 3.73s. Plus 5.0 motors run out of power on the top end so people will be killing you on the highway because you will not be in your power band and have a quick redline. You will bearly pass 120 mph with 4.10s.
Dampachi, you are still the coolest on this forum. Just let my and my 3.55 live in peace.

Actually I took that picture that said "owned" on it and edited it to say what it does now. I was bored one night and thought I'd make my own version of that picture for Mustang fans.
Anyway, 1993_GT good choice with the 3:55 gears. If you look at a 5.0 & SuperFords magazine you'll see that most of the Mustangs in there have 3:55 gears. I suggest you pick up a couple of issues because there are guys in there like you who get stock 5.0s and turn them into 9 second monsters. It also has great advice on where to start when it comes to mods and what gives you the best performance for your dollar.

i have 4:10s on my ranger...its the only thing keeping me anywhere near streetable with only 100 measly stock hp. on a powerful car, 4:10s have 2 purposes...burnout contests and 1/8 or 1/4 mile races. and if ur gonna do 1/8 mile races, ford makes a 4:56 rear end, it comes on rangers a lot of the 4x4 guys use them on their trucks to compensate for 40 inch tires

Oh, I didn't mean 3.55s are totally useless. They're perfect on the DOHC 4.6..which you have. And they also come stock on the cobra. I just meant for his foxbody 3.55s wouldn't be as noticeable as say...3.73s or 4.10s. And thanks for the compliment. :)
