intake filter down by side vent hole?

Is there ne benefits of running the intake filter down further to the side vent in the body.. I have a apexi intake. i guess it wouldn't b ethat beneficial to run it down another foot or so to get that fresh cold air, lol just an idea.. thanks

might be, but i saw an interesting thing on the risks of water the other day... basically if it even MIGHT see water it's not worth it...

Ive been wondering if anyones going to come out with a plastic air collector you can stick in there that will direct air to your filter.

The risk of getting water into your air filter in enough quantity to cause a problem is very, very minimal.

i don't think it would be too much of a prob with an mr2, cause of where the piping goes...but have a read.

hehe -- that's all fine and good for the ground scraping honduhs which place their filter 1" off the ground -- but IF you get that much water in a MR2 air filter i think you have real issues to deal with... like getting a life raft!

yeah, but the thread WAS asking about mounting it lower.... where it is it's well out of water... although the piping goes up over the engine ten back down to the turbo, so the water would have to make it there...

re: the turbo. while the water may get dispersed before the engine, the first thing it would hit is the turbo, and the sudden loading it would crate on the compressor blades would transfer to the ceramic exhaust turbine and may well shatter it. there's more than just the engine to worry about.

We are not talking about a lot of water here ... and whatever water managed to get into the intake, past the AFM and actually into the turbo would proove much less or a problem or "load" than the significant amount of oil many owners see that goes into the turbos intake from the PCV.

Again, water in the air filter (unless you are pumping a hose into it or submerging it) is not going to cause any significant problems. If you have a cheap filter, you may notice it rusting though.

IIRC, A majority of the factory turbos do not have a ceramic turbine side. That is a JSPEC thing (not all years), so yours very well may.

only thing i was trying to say is....

even at the lowest point you can get the filter in the side vent -- if it were to be submerged in enough water to fill the intake piping/cause load on turbo compressor, you would be 1-2 feet deep in something.... that something IS what i would worry about....

water splashing on a filter -- i never worry about that.

the SCC article the SUBMERGED the intake piping in a fish tank ... didn't splash water over the filter at road speed... submerged it -- under water... snorkle time for the MR2 guys..........
