first of all your question is too vague. shop cost vary in price and what is done as far as service. second you failed to tell us the vitals- make, model, year, miles .
shop work.....its rather expensive, but if you can afford it, go for it. i have'nt had work done at a shop that i've had to pay for, so im not familiar with rates. but really, anyone with common sense in need of a tune up is quite capable of doing it on thier own, provided they have the adequet tools. youll save a ton of $$$$$$$$
theres something about a mans pride when he works on his own car. its like your woman- you wouldnt want some other dude touching her. would you?
basic tune up is probably somewhere along the line of:
new airfilter
new sparkplugs
check and top off fluids
check belts
im sure it varys from shop to shop, but those are the main things.

The only thing i would have a shop do is a winterization. Always have a mechanic check your belts for wear because somtimes it's hard to see cracks, and I dont think that any normal person has the ability to flush a radiator. Also, if you arent competant, changing belts can be quite tricky if you have never done it before, so I would say changing belts and flushing your radiator should be done by a mechanic. Otherwise, oil change, spark plugs, and brakes are a do it yourself project. But if you are winterizing, have a shop flush your radiator. I had my car winterized (2000 Eclipse GT), and they flushed my radiator and changed cracked belts for like 250 i think. It's a little much, but like 95 percent of the cost is labor...if you know what you are doing and have the means to do it yourself, you could change your belts, change your oil, spark plugs, and flush radiator for under 100 bucks. Otherwise it will cost a LOT more.

as far as rates go, yeah they are pricey! i had the forks and shock rebuilt on my KX250 and the rate was $60.00/hr. fn crazy! a car shop cant be to far off. and what sucks is that the mechanic is only making like $10.00/hr, give or take a few bucks.

Its easy to do yourself. Go to VautoZone and ask the clerk there for what you need.
