Alright. Im kinda pissed right now. I got those mounts installed this week. I bought them because the engine was knocking around. You can hear the engine actually banging around.
So the mounts went in, and the knocking is gone. But it's still making a knocking sound. When the car is at a stop, and I accelerate (not racing or speeding, just normal), there is knock STILL there. That same sound has been there since I bought the car. It comes form the engine comparment, and I always thought it was the engine. And, it's still there. It's only when accerlating, and I think I hear it whencoming to a complete stop. My brakes my noise (even though my mechanic said there's nothing wrong with them), so i cant tell for sure with the braking think. Any ideas on the sound. I would give more information, but I don't have any more. I hope it's not CV joints or anything like that. Anyway to test?

Check your lower control arm bushings. This is a possible cause if your hearing knock when u accelerate and brake.

you can also make sure that your exhaust isnt hitting anything. if i remeber correctly theres a recall on balljoints or something on the 2g's. call your local mitsu dealer give them your vin number and have them look up whether the recalls were done on your car. if they havent been done take it in and get em done. most of them should be free and the ones that arent are the stupid crap that doesnt matter.

its a knocking, or a ticking?

The balljoints could still need to be done again, even if the recall was done. And the dealer still has to do it. Safety recalls dont expire, no matter what they try to tell you. Mine were done a few times.

do they still replace them for free when you are professionally drag racing the car?

^^ I doubt it. They didn't want to replace mine even when I don't. I went to a place and had them do a rebuild on my axle ($85.00), and it went away.
I just have a uncompetent Mitsu. dealer.

Yes, they do. They dont have a choice. If any dealer refuses to do a safety recall, contact the NTSB, who enforces these things. And there was more than one recall on the 2g balljoints. They even recalled the recall, because it was still a piss poor solution (slopping some tar on the boot).
But who says I professionally race? I just tool around at the track on friday nights...

Cool. I'll have to check out the dealer. I dont know what was done to it... so Ill go there during the week. So even if it was done, I can get it done again? What exactly was recalled? Is there documentation on this?

Do a search here http://www-odi.nhtsa.dot.gov/cars/problems/recalls/recallsearch.cfm It will list every safety recall

How do you tell if your ball joints are bad? Can you just call up the Mitsu dealer and ask if there are any recalls on your car and tell them to perform them all for free?

The test is to lift UP on the tire, and watch the boot. If the joint expands, it could be bad. Spec is some fraction of a millimeter. If it fails this test, it MUST be replaced, free of charge. Its not your fault the joints fail, and it could kill you. Thats what safety recalls are for, to make manufactures pay for thier stupidity :) If the recall wasnt done, and the joints arent bad, they are not going to replace them. I like to check mine every so often. USually during a tranny swap, which I do quite frequently unfortunately, but I've got the front end lifted and I'm unbolting the lower lateral links anyway... If they start to look questionable I just take it in to the dealer and they replace them if they fail the test.
Edit> also keep in mind that the techs like to do these recalls. If I remember correcly they get paid almost 2 hours for the job. It takes about 10-15 minutes. These are the things that bring in the money for flat rate techinicians. ;) My brother works for a mitsu dealership, and would do these all day if could.

My lower lateral control arms got replaced about 5 months back because the wheel was practically lifting up out of the boot. That was kinda pricey, and I didnt know about the recall. My dad mentioned that some places like to pay for the work that was done. Is there anyway I can get my money back?

If you still have the reciepts I believe you can. But sometimes Mitsu requires the dealer to save the warrantied parts, not sure how that will affect you. Dealers are rated from A to D, the worse they are the more hoops they have to jump through to get mitsu to actually warranty the part. They may change it for free, and not get paid by mitsu. Sucky. At any rate, I would try it, can't hurt.

So I went to the dealer today. They sent me to the Jeep dealer, b.c. only they can do the work. Anywho, they will replace my ball joints... even though I got all new control arms... and then REIMBURST me for the control arms!! It was like $360 in parts back in my pocket. Just have to go back, schcedule and get the work done. Then it'l take awhile to get my money back. That $$$ going right to my exhaust!!!
