Small block chevy install/removal

Can someone tell me what books, videos, or manuals out there that I can take a look at to do my own removal and installation of a small block chevy engine. I am tired of being railroaded by mechanics out here, and would like to learn how to do this myself. It would be greatly appreciated if someone would respond. The cars in question are 1964 Chevy Impala and 1984 Monte Carlo SS

There are several. Haynes and chiltons are the most common. They help, but are not very detailed. Most cover several years and engines for the type of car. It will get you started though. They are the cheapest source.
Alldata.com now has a diy section. It is like 24 dollars a year. It is the same books the mechanics use. May not be much help for the years you are talking about.

In general, it should be fairly easy to remove the engine from either car.
Disconnnect all the electrical, unhook the starter, altenator, distributer, and coil from the wiring harness.
Take out the starter
Drain the radiator
Take the hoses off the water pump. The upper radiator hose, the lower, and both heater hoses.
If you have a/c, I would unbolt it from the engine and find a way to hang it over the side so you don't have to crack open the lines.
Disconnect power steering hoses. You may have to drain the pump.
Unbolt the exhaust.You may get by with just disconnecting the exhaust manifold from the rest of the exhaust, but if you have headers, you might have to unbolt them from the heads.
Support and unbolt the transmission
Unbolt the motor mounts to the frame.
Check for ground straps
Get a cherry picker and pull.

A couple of additional things.
If you have an auto trans, unbolt the torque converter from the flywheel (actually called a flexplate) before unbolting the transmission.
If you have a standard trans, unbolt the transmission where it meets the clutch bellhousing. Leave the clutch and bellhousing still attached to the engine when you remove it.

there is a video that amazon sells on engines and they use a small block chevy for the build and also at summit they have made by boxwrench and theres 8 steps they go through from removal to assembly and installing and starting and everything in between.

great advice..one question....Is the same procedure applied to chevy novas?? like,4 door '77 novas??

ALL engine removals are the same, unless the car has efi, then it gets complicated.
