Which would be better?

To have the transmission shop do my rear end swap (estimated 5-600 dollars), or have it delivered to the shop, pick it up with a truck (i can use a friends since it'll be local - but actually john let me know which vehicle youre bringing when you come up this way), and have a few people off of NJFBOA who know what they're doing come over and we do the swap at my house (10 bucks for gear oil, 5 bucks for lim slip additive, however much to feed them)

Input? Suggestions?

I would say it would be better to have the shop do it cause they are Pros, but it would definately be worth it to do it the other way, it's way cheaper plus if those guys know what they are doing, they wouldn't have a problem and it would be just as good as shop work.

I always get a sense of pride in doing my own work or at least helping out any way i can.

I try to do just about everything I can to my car myself, but it's mostly because I'm cheap. I have pride in doing something like that myself, but it would probably be easier to have it done professionally, and if they screw it up, you can get them to fix it.

So eather...
$600
or
approx. $50 and the opportunity to maybe learn how to do it yourself the next time...

Id go with the latter.

I do all my own work even if I dont know what Im doing. If I didn't, it would just sit. I barely have the money for parts let alone labor. Plus, if you don't try then you won't learn.

I agree it would be more satisfying to do ur own work. If u have never done it make sure they know what they are doing.

Are you swapping the whole rear end or just changing gears?? If your changing gears I would let the shop do it because its a real pain in the ass to setup properly.

Well John did the gear swap... but probably cuz of shit that the car's been thru in the past the rear is a little fucked up, and... that got worse.

So now it's a whole rear

Why do you need to know which vehicle I am bringing?

Well John did the gear swap... but probably cuz of shit that the car's been thru in the past the rear is a little fucked up, and... that got worse.

So now it's a whole rearWhat happen was that I went up to Kasey house to help with the gear install and we ran into a couple of snags along the way. Apperently there was a metalic rubbing sound coming from the rear prior to me getting there and we had a snag with one of his drums coming off when we first attempted to do it. Then after the second time apperently a open V6 differential don't need the use of a spacer when using 2 and 3 series gears but once we had the rear end opened we noticed that the passenger side bolts of his rear were bowed and the thread to the bearing cap damage as well at the bearing chewed up alittle do to him hitting a curb with the rear tire on that side. So long story short the bolt wouldn't go back in straight and I didn't have a tap or die kit(Kasey and father later fixed the threads with a tap&die and finished the job) with me and the other side went on fine. So I set preload checked backlash while holding the opposite cap in place and checked contact pattern. Which were all fine. The rear didn't make any noise and worked fine til he went to get his exhaust done. When he got it back there was a noise coming from back there and after a mechanic opened up the rear he saw that a tooth on the gears was chipped and I am now wondering if since the bolts and threads were damaged if that axle on that side isn't bowed as well. Anyway thats what happen. Kasey correct me on anything if I am wrong.

That's it pretty much... was wondering what vehicle because first off wondering if you wanted to help out with this, and if so and you have your truck then possibly if we could use it to get the rear from the shop. I can use a friends tho

Sounds like your rear end has taken quite a pounding :D

Also, are you going to feel comfortable having a bunch of people's hands on your rear end?

i payed 500 for my rear end swap learning is fun but thats for sukka's....lol just kidding. i try an do alot of my own work also but big jobs i pay the pro's just to ensure when im doing 80-100 my damn car wont fall apart because i forgot one damn screw or had a few extra parts left when i was done.(i know im not the only ghetto ass in here) it happens sometimes and sometimes i dont wanna take the chance. pay someone if u dont feel like risking it, and if u can afford it then do that shit for real, why get dirty if u dont have 2.

I'll be doing my own swap soon. Hopefully it isn't as hard of a job as most of you make it out to be, but if it is...oh well. It'll just take me a little longer.

Why would you be doing a swap on your's WeirdRich? You already have LSD and rear discs.

Unless it's for a 12 bolt? Don't think you quite need one tho...

I found a wrecked Camaro and got the rear end out of it that had 4.11's and a locker. Rather than switch the internals, Im swapping the whole thing so I have my perfect stock setup for a back up.

Well, update: got the rear from the transmission shop to my garage today with the help of a friend's truck. Going to take it the the performance shop Saturday for the swap, and get my exhaust welded while it's up.

I have cancelled classes so I wanna get thsi done earlier.

If I took out my passenger and back seats I can get the rear inside, right? And this wouldn't mess anything up besides possibly carpet right?
