I Have A 96' Jetta Gl Auto. I Have Gone Through All Vaccum Lines, Replaced Plugs, Air Filter. Still I Have Problems. It Will Idle Ok In Park And Nuetral, Right At 800-900 Rpm. When I Put It In Reverse Or Drive, It Drops To 400-500 Rpm And Then Usually Dies. Where Is This Maf That People Talk About Cleaning? Also What Do You Reccomened? I Also Read That Autozone Will Read Codes, Do You Think This Will Tell Me Whats Wrong? Oh Yes My Cel Is On. If You Could Please Help I Would Appreciate It Enormously. Thanks So Much.

The codes will just give you a general description of a malfunction or something that is operating out of range. Once you get those codes you need to research. You can ask in this forum or here http://tech.bentleypublishers.com/forum.jspa?forumName=volkswagen.a.a3
Take a look at your air intake system. From the air filter to the throttle body. It is all connected to the black flex pipe on the passenger side of the engine. Look for oil contamination. If so the valve that attaches to the valve cover is clogged or bad. Then you will need to clean all of the components. You can search here or on the bently's forum for procedures on cleaning the MAF and the Throttle body. I found some really helpful info on both.
The MAF is the first device behind the airfilter box with a plug in it.
Let us know if you have any more specific questions and we will be glad to help.

Thanks Man. I Took Off The Stupid Maf And Soaked It In Alcohol 91%, Also Cleaned Throttle Body And Intake Hose. It Idles Great, And Idles Alot Better In Revese And Drive, Doesn't Die Now. I'm Still Gonna Go And Get It Checked At Autozone. I Appreciate It, Any Other Coments Are Much Appreciated As Well People. Thanks
