To begin with i was looking at the ninja 250's but had a friend refered me to the honda CBR's and so far I seem to really Like the body style . I was just curious as to if there is any reason why the cbr 250 (one of the older models propably, such as 95-2000) wouldn't be a good begginer bike, and if not how long would you expect a good rider to keep it?

There aren't any CBR250s in America unless they are grey market, so my advice will be useless on this one.

I have owned a few Hondas in my day, and still have a 1100 Sabre, and consider the quality of workmanship on the Hondas to top notch, and they just last and last.
1980 CX500 - 62K Moved engine into a 1978 CX500 chassis and new owner added 10K
1981 GL500 Silverwing - 39K Sold to a good friend
1984 VF1100S Sabre - 34K Still Running.
I guess I would say buy a Honda. Maybe a 500 CC that you will like so much that you won't want to sell it for a larger bike.

the cbr is a great learner bike!
down under we are limited to 250cc max (actually weight/power)
i learnt on the fzr250rr which is the same as the cbr250rr and zxr250rr
just pick your favourite color, blue, red or green (yamaha, honda or kawasaki)
not sure whether the ninja you speak of is the same as the old zxr250.
i think its the same as our gpx250 (going by old posts by the legendary headswim)
if so the the cbr will shit all over the ninja!!!!!
just make sure its a RR
