now im a black metaller?

My friends have decided to make a band. This isnt really a big problem, in fact, its quite fun talking about music stuff together, although we havnt played a full song together yet, because of a few problems the previous half-assed jam sessions.(bassist not knowing how to play the bass, guitarist not knowing what type of music we want to play- the bassist is better now though)
The problem is, a few weeks ago, the drummer decided he wants to be a black metal type. Im fine with that, i just want to play some songs together and have fun. So the so called "black metaller" went to get some "black metal" gear, black band shirts, black tapered pants, steel-toe boots, spikes here and there, some accesories, you know, things you wear around the arms and neck stuff. (Well i bought some shirts with him too and went to alter some of my pants tighter, :p but i already had tight pants) Then he buys this bag that he sees some of his other *adulty* black metal friends carry, and stick some iron on black metal sticker things and square studs, and he brings that bag to school whenevery he has few books to carry.
So some people know we want to make a band, thats no big deal, but now all of a sudden people refer to me as "the black metaller" Today when i walked into a room a guy that i knew a little said to my good friend who was with him(who is like me, just wants to jam with friends, and have fun) "eh, heres your black metal friend" And you know what? I HATE THAT. Well maybe for some people who are proud of being a black metaller, or just want to be noticed as a black metaller, they will like that, and feel a sense of accomplishment or something, but here, in singapore, in my school, i dont want to be known as a fucking black metaller, or goth, or a punk, as some more ignorant people mistake my "black metal" friend for because of all the studs on his little "black metal" bag. Because i feel like im being labelled as A FREAK. Not that i think goths are freaks, but compared to my most people here, its kind of *freakish*
Maybe its because i bought an iron maiden iron on sticker and put it on my bag, but whatever the reason, i am just ANGRY. AND THATS WHY I NEED TO RELIEVE STRESS. IN THE STRESS RELEASE FORUM. i am annoyed at how ignorant people can be. Im not really annoyed at the poser in the boots, because, as annoying as he is, i know him well, and i know he will soon grow out of that stage just like he did in the "punk" stage in 04, or the "japanese car enthusiast" stage in 03, no matter how much he thinks he is going to hell and worship satan because he has a shirt that says so, or how "mature" he acts,
-This is another thing that bugs the hell out of me, he acts like hes my father, my personal advisor, my "big brother", and he tells me to do this and that, and that its "for my own good" :lol2: until i tell him not to bug me, and give him a shitload of black metal facts he didnt know. (and he shuts right up. He knows me for my rock roots. :sunglasse )
And another thing that bugs me, is how the dude in the boots tries to push the so called band. We want to play a song. An easy song that will help us learn to coordinate with each other is The Lord of the Rings by Stratovarius. The dude in the boots decides he wants to jam this friday, so he gets the bassist and rythm guitarist to learn that song. The problem is, he pushes them too fucking hard. The bassist is not at the level where his fingers are coordinated enough to even use a pick properly, and the guitarist still needs some practice with changing powerchords. today, the bassist and i came to the conclusion that the dude in the boots wants to play a song to show to his little black metal friend he too, is a fellow black metaller who is skilled enough to play in a band. And that ass gets all desperate and angry when they couldnt play their parts on my guitar yesterday. We keep telling him to cool it, but that guy wont change. I tell the band i wont play with them if we have so many problems, but the problem is, they know a vietnam dude who is in their class, who is 18, and has been playing guitar for 4 years. and apparantly, hes my replacement. A fine replacement i might add, a guy that knows how to play lots of metallica songs, who is quite advanced in guitar, and who is also a FUCKING JACKASS, WHO I THINK WILL GIVE THE RHYTHM GUITARIST AND BASSIST HELL, WITH HIS METALLICA SONGS AND FUCKED UP ATTITUDE. Well, after typing all that, i think i might just forget about playing with the little band. Lets see if they can get things rolling with a few fucked up attitudes, and some clouded minds who are blinded from reality. Lets see if that little vietnam fucker or that immature dude in the stupid boots that make him look like the mcdonalds clown are as patient as me on the newbies. i doubt they will ever play a full song together without me. It seems i am the only one who can still think straight enough to get a band rolling.

LoL wow I wouldn't care if people classified me as a black metaller - I'm proud of what I listen to. But I can totally see where you're coming from. I can understand why that would make you made.
I guess one way to not appear blackmetal-ish would be to start dressing like something the opposite of black metal. Start dressing all ghetto and shit. LoL
By the way, it seems your friends may be borderline poseurs. Anyone that needs to dress to make people think that they're heavy, needs to stop. I've listened to black metal the last four years, but I don't dress like it. I listen to the music for me, not for someone else. I'm not out to try to make people think I'm heavy. And I think that people that do that, like "goths" and poseur-jackasses need to quick worrying about what other people think. We have so many poseaurs at our school that listen to "Slipknot" and other retarded "Nu-metal" shit, and they think they're heavy as hell, and they dress like the spawn of satan. I, on the other hand, listen to stuff that's like 200 times heavier, but by looking at me, you probably wouldn't guess it.
Now don't get me wrong, I dont think there's anything wrong with wearing some stuff, but to put it on for the sole purpose of impressing others is kind of stupid.
So if I were you I would tell your friends to stop "acting" black metal, and to be it for themselves. Tell them to dress not-to-impress, and to be themselves. And tell them that you're going to stop trying to dress the same way because you don't care if people think you're heavy. Just do your own thing. Just my 2 cents.

What I would do, is just explain to the guy that called you "The Black Metaller", what you said here. Tell him you just wanna play some guitar and make some songs, but its not all about black metal. Tell him your friend is all about black metalling, and you just agreed with it because you don't care what you play, you just like to make music. Then you and the other guy can make fun of the Ronald Mcdonald boots guy for being a poser. I think it's totally lame to change your image that quick just because youre in a band. If he wasnt into all that stuff before the band, why is he into it now? Total poser. But who cares really, hopefully he will outgrow it, and learn to just be himself.
But out of all that is a lesson for you too. Don't worry if somebody thinks you are a black metaller. You aren't in that band for them. Be happy with yourself, knowing that you are what you are, and you do what you do because you wanna do it. If their view is messed up, who cares. Just tell them how it is. If they get it, then cool, and if they don't, then its not worth being mad about anyways.
But in the end, Im sorry the band thing isnt working out, I wish the boots guy was more mature and wasnt causing problems. I'd say to try and find some more mature friends who'd rather do it for fun just like you. Its always better that way.

^ ^ Well no, I didn't mean they were retarded. I started off listening to that stuff back in the day, so I would be calling myself retarded. But I'm just saying I can't stand the ones that think that stuff is heavy-as-hell when they haven't even explored the metal genre fully. I'm not saying those are that bad of bands. I listened to them before I moved onto death metal and black metal. But I'm just saying some people need to furtherly explore the metal genre before they deam themselves "goth" and stuff.

Just let them listen to less death metal, metal... who cares, maybe they dont wanna be you. I personally think the whole goth way of life is retarded, but thats just my professional opinion. You can't really say what other people need to do in order to call themselves what they wanna call themselves. Being goth isnt a priviledge. You don't need to pass goth qualifications. You dont need a goth card to be part of the goth club. Stop thinking you are the goth president. Until you can just let people do what they wwanna do, and not care... you are overly concerned with image, which is the opposite if what goths are supposed to care about. I think you need to have your goth rights suspended.

I say go with it, man. Black metal is some awesome shit. It's really complicated music, but it's awesome as hell when you get it all together. However, if they don't like you or you don't like them, quit the band. You don't have to put up with their shit. Good luck to ya.

Hey, good news! The band thing is finally working, but we dont really have fixed places, we switch places all the time. This friday we played paranoid by black sabbath, not bad for our first time eh? We recorded it on a cassette. The vietnam guy wasnt so bad, he was nice, but he was kind of wierd. Hes good, technically, and can sort of shred, but he doesnt seem to have a sense of timing or rythm or know how to count. So the solo came out funny. Next week we're playing sweet child of mine!

Good to hear you've worked out your problems. Now, Ozzy and GNR aren't black metal, but props to you for picking good songs. Simpler songs are good until you can get into the more hardcore stuff. Stick to it and you might get somewhere.

Complicated?? I've never heard a black metal band that's been complicated either musically or lyrically. Post some recommendations of these songs, I'd really like the hear them.
Dream Theater is complicated music. I'm wondering how these bands compare.

Maybe complicated isn't the right word. Dimmu Borgir, for example, has some really intense and fast-paced songs. Cradle of Filth is pretty fast, too. Listen to some of their music and you'll see how fast they play.

Whoa then you haven't listened to enough black metal. If you want I can email you some songs man.
Don't get me wrong, some black metal is pretty simple, but some has tons of shit going on.
I'm looking at my massive list of black metal songs right now, and out of the many bands, to name some that are more-so "complicated" (as in they have many different instruments):
Aeternus
Corvus Corax
Dark Funeral
Dimmu Borgir
Dark Tranquility
Emperor
Finntroll
Insomnium
Marduk
Old Man's Child
Satyricon
Vintersorg
Windir
Not all of the stuff by these bands is "complicated", but some of those do some more-complex shit then your typical black metal.
If you wanna know just plain good bands in general, I would reccomend:
Aeternus
Amon Amarth
At the Gates
Brutality
Centinex
Dark Funeral
Darkthrone (older stuff)
Emperor
Immortal
In Flames
Insomnium
Legion 1349
Marduk
Mayhem
Naglfar
Ragnarok
Satyricon
The Bezerker
The Crown
Windir
.... all are great bands. \m/
