i have a 1g bov on my 96 gsx and was wondering if it would harm it at all if i disconnected the tube going for the bov back into the intake

You need that to open the BOV. You wont harm the BOV, but you risk the turbo.

Is this because of the type of bov i have because i've seen a couple other eclipses with this done but they had different types of bov's.

Leave BOTH lines connected! I think you are referring to the big hose, and not the smaller one that goes to the intake manifold. If you disconnect the big hose you are letting metered air out and will run rich between shifts and have poor idle/stalling. You can vent with the proper air metering system. I bet you want to have the cool noise when you let off the gas...am i right? If you improperly vent, the DSM gods will give you crankwalk.

The other line, as mentioned by Kevin above, opens the BOV. My last turbo was ruined by me forgetting to reconnect it.

The type of BOV doesn't matter. If you don't return air to the intake, you will have problems. For more info, do a search for venting.
