The True Redneck

I read this and I must agree with Naki I am a redneck.
We have enjoyed the redneck jokes for years. It is time to take a reflective look at the core beliefs of a culture that values home, family, countryand God. If I had to stand before a dozen terrorists who threaten my life, I'd choose a half a dozen or so rednecks to back me up. Tire irons, squirrel guns and grits- that's what rednecks are made of. I hope I'm one of those.
You might be a redneck if ..... It has never occured to you to be offended by the phrase "one Nation Under God..."
You've never protested about seeing the ten comandments posted in a public place.
You still say "Christmas " instead of "The Holidays"
You bow your head when someone prays
You stand and place your hand over your heart when they play the National Anthem.
You treat Vietnam Vets. with great respect and always have.
You've never burned an American flag.
You know what you believe and you arent afraid to say so, no matter who is listening.
You respect your elders and expect your kids to do the same.
You'd give your last dollar to a friend.

So would I.But I don't believe that Invading Iraq equates to defending anything.
But if they started parroting nonsense put into their heads by deceitful and dishonest politicians, I'd still have to put them straight.

i can't help thinking of people towing black people behind cars...
demanding that people of certain religions be monitored as security threats...
insisting that some people's rights are worth more than others...
being blissfully ignorant and unconcerened about the damage they do to OTHER peoples environments...
hitching up with their cousins!
So yall have fun bein rednecks now...y' hear?

Putting that definition to 'redneck' is the same as pointing out Muslims are terrorists, intolerant, sexist and racist.

The core beliefs of a redneck are god, country and family. Most of the other stuff comes from these ideals. Of course with anything you have the bad apples and posting about the bad apples doesn't change what a redneck means.

I always told people I was a Mississippi redneck before. Your list just confirms what I already thought to be true. Add saying "Ma'am" to every lady you meet out of respect, and still holding doors open for others and the list would be more complete.

We here in liberal Massachusetts think God is dead and the country stinks. We enjoy shoving the elderly, disrespecting our women and we even provide those ig'nant ho-mo-sex-ools with equal rights (repulsive, I know!). Holding doors, saying prayers and helping others is strictly forbidden. Your customs seem strange and frightening to us...

Hey DGB454, I think he was joking.
Now speaking of the word redneck. I never really like the term like so many other stereotypical slander words out there. The word itself does not make sense to me. Its typically use to stereotype a certain group of southern men, but if you really think about it any white man can have a red neck if they stay out too long in the sun. And not all white men are/have the stereotypical attributes the name is associated with. It just simply amazes me that in this day and age people still resort to using such names among each other. I feel this way about any word used for slander/hurtful purposes.
Another thing that bothers me is the fact that some groups use these slanderous words among themselves and when other groups use them they get offended. I say don't use them at all and there won't be a problem. Just my :2cents:

Here's one for bothe redneck and yankees...
Why I love the South
Only a true Southerner knows the difference between a hissie fit and a
conniption.
Nobody but a true Southerner knows how many fish make up a mess.
A true Southerner can show or point out to you the general direction of
yonderways.
A true Southerner knows exactly how long "directly" is - as in "Going
to town, be back directly."
Even true Southern babies know that "Gimme some sugar" is not a request
for the white, granular sweet substance that sits in a pretty little
bowl in the middle of the table.
All true Southerners know exactly when "by and by" is.
True Southerners know instinctively that the best gesture of solace for
a neighbor who's got trouble is a plate of hot fried chicken and a big
bowl of cold 'tater salad. (If the trouble is a real crisis, they also
know to add some hot biscuits and "nanner puddin'.)
True Southerners grow up knowing the difference between "pert' near"
and "a right far piece."
True Southerners both know and understand the differences between a
redneck, a good ol' boy, and po' white trash.
No true Southerner would ever assume that the car with the flashing
turn signal is actually going to make a turn.
True Southerners know that "fixin" can be used both as a noun, verb and
adverb.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
You might be a yankee if:
1. Your wife opens the door for you.
2. You let doors slam in anyone’s face (male or female).
3. You think dinner & supper are the same meal.
4. Your philosophy is "there oughta be a law".
5. You escape high taxes in the North and vote to raise them in the
South.
6. Your socks match your "outfit".
7. You're a winter resident of "Floorida".
8. What's on T.V. tonight is important.
9. Who won the academy awards is news.
10. You believe your newspaper contains news.
11. Y'all is one person.
12. You wave at the lady with the flat tire.
13. You consider yourself a "progressive" instead of a nosy, busybody
do-gooder.
14. You talk through your nose.
15. You fall for a Southern used car salesman turned president.
16. You're patriotic no matter what the government does.
17. You're offended by Southern symbols in the South.
18. You talk with your mouth full.
19. Your parents never taught you to say “thank-you”.
20. You think addressing your elders as “Sir” & “Ma’am” will hurt your
self esteem.
21. You consider your car a status symbol.
22. You take the Wall Street Journal so your neighbors will see it in
your driveway.
23. You call everyone “Guys”.
24. When you want others to think you’ve done something extraordinary
you holler “Yesssss!”

I have to agree with Flatrater, a true redneck believes in God, Family and Country above all else. I consider myself a Southern Redneck based on some of the discussion on this forum. I believe that all men and women are created equal, that the color of a persons skin means nothing and that what ever religion you choose is up to you and not for me to decide. Whether you are Christian, Jewish, Muslim, White, Black or Pink, Man or Woman it is what you do and how you treat your fellow man while on this earth that you will be judged by! I are a REDNECK!!!!!

I like Nascar, have a college education, and am well mannered, too. Rednecks don't necessarily have to be ill mannered and lack education. It all depends on your perspective I guess. It appears that some folks have based their opinion of what a redneck is on the stereotypical media/movie portrayal. This could not be further from the truth.

What is the difference between a patriotic Christian and a redneck?, because I don't consider myself to be a redneck must I hate god, think poorly of my family and look down on my country?. Does this make me a racist as well?. I have always been told the term "redneck" is a negative stereotype of low class uneducated people. Which I don't think applies to anyone I know of who is still on AF(Mod or member}.

Being a redneck is more about having a core set of morals and beliefs that usually differ from the way others think. In my youth, if I referred to a woman as ANYTHING other than "maam", I got my ass beat by my dad. If I didn't go to church on Sunday for whatever reason, I got my ass beat by my dad. If I accidentally cursed infront of a lady, I got my ass beat by my dad, and I'm thankful everyday that my father raised me like that. Being a redneck is about respecting people no matter what. A redneck can go up to ANY person, wether they are dirt poor or filthy rich, and show them genuine kindness and respect.
For all the people that think "rednecks are uneducated, toothless, sister humping retards," you watch too much TV. And even if you truly feel that way about a redneck, chances are he doesn't hold any animosity towards you. As an example, where I work EVERY employee has a college degree of some sort. Mine happens to be mechanical engineering. 90% of the people I work with are self proclaimed rednecks. That includes people of all ethnicity, shape, color (yes I even work with a few black people that are bigger SELF POCLAIMED rednecks than I am, just to shoot that theory down). I have been to every corner of the country, and I can ALWAYS tell the people that like a "redneck lifestyle" because they are just plain "nicer"
I'm ready for this post to be picked apart, but It's allright because I said what I wanted to say.

RobRob, my father never laid a hand on me til the day he died. He explained himself rather than "beating my ass" and I have all the same morals that you bring up, so the beating you to make you a better man theory is not really one I can see in anything but extreme cases of out of control kids.
Also I think you know me better than anyone else that has posted in this thread, I talk to you several times a days on aim, yahoo, AF. I chat with your girlfriend from time to time(which you know about of course, He he). Do I strike you as anti Christian, racist who hates god and his country?. Have you not seen me stick up for this country, in debates with people like Kasey?. Yet because of were I am from and how I am raised, I am somehow inferior to you self proclaimed "rednecks"(which BTW is a negative stereotype to everyone but those who call themselves that and if its not then every person I have ever heard use that term needs to be updated on your new found meaning of the word). I love my country, I love my family and I am and was raised catholic. So you tell me why because I am not a "redneck", I am not allowed to view things the way I do or believe the things I believe?. I just think that it's a poorly used word to describe the good men I think all you guys are and if it was posed as more of a question like if because of this I am a redneck I understand were you guys are coming from but it doesn't appear that way to me but I may just be reading into something incorrectly.

It's all well and good if you want to place yourselves on a pedestal, call yourselves rednecks and proclaim that you are model citizens and human beings. I think what may confuse some people is the fact that you are vaguely implying that non-rednecks are lacking in comparison (in regard to manners, ethics, patriotism, faith, respect etc).
I'd easily bet my life that the majority of rednecks are not glorious specimens of moral perfection, just as most non-rednecks are not the callous, ill-mannered anti-Christian plutocrats some rednecks might assume. This redneck stereotype, while mildly amusing, has no merit whatsoever.

The intent of this post was not to make non-rednecks as bad or ill-mannered. That was far from my intention. I wanted to show what a redneck believes in, the things a redneck believes family, god and country isn't exclusive to the rednecks. The rednecks are picked on and stereotyped to be something of a monster and they are not. We could use the Boston liberals as another group not alll of the Boston libs are ill-mannered, so are but not all. Same thing goes for the muslims. I feel most muslims are just as friendly as we are but the muslims that make the news are the ones that everyone hears about and they are what is used to define a whole culture.
Years ago I worked in the heart of redneckville, in Altanta Georgia. I can say I met some very friendly southerns and some bigoted southerns but the friendly ones were in greater numbers. I am sure if I spent some time in Boston that I would find both types of people there also.
Not all rednecks are bad and being called a redneck isn't a bad thing. Being called a redneck recently didn't bug me one bit, I didn't get upset. When we are called a name what we choose to do is what defines it as an insult. Not being ashamed or insulted by being called a redneck lessens the impact of the word and this word will have no impact on anyone. I am sure you feel the same way about being called a Boston liberal.

Robs71Nova and Flatrater have said it very well. There are Rednecks everywhere and for what it is worth that isn't a bad thing. You don't have to be a Redneck to be a good person, just be yourself and the Redneck part will take care of itself.

Speaking for myself, I wasn't trying to offend anyone. I was also going by the people I have seen and met that I would consider rednecks. I'm related to a few rednecks. Doesn't mean i do not like them.

, just be yourself and the Redneck part will take care of itself.Once again I may be reading into this but it sounds like your saying being a redneck automatically makes you a good person but the rest of us need to work at it and once we become a good person we are a redneck. I shall never be, nor do I ever want to be referred to as a redneck if this makes you better than me in your eye's so be it. I will remain a Yankee or a New Yorker(or whatever you would like to call me) and if this makes me a devil worshiping nazi with no manners who hates his country and everyone in it in your eyes because of it, so be that too.
BTW I hate dumb arguments or disagreements especially those over the net. So I am not going to be responding to this thread anymore. I may be reading into things I shouldn't be but this thread is rubbing me the wrong way and I don't like the way a redneck is being explained when compared to other Americans who don't consider themselves to be rednecks. If you have anything you would like me to know as I won't be checking in here please use the PM feature.
Thanks,
John

this is sad, you know the term redneck did not even really exist untill Jeff foxworthy......
Listen to yourselfs,
"Lets catagorize ourselfs and huddle in groups and hate everyone elese"
People are people, it does not matter if you live in NY, IL, MI, CA. Why do you have to be in a class of people depending on where you live? Why do you have to be a redneck to love god? Why do you have to be a terroist just because you have a different view?
What ever happend to the happiness??
seems like today people love to hate and can't stand to love anything.

There seems to be a misconception in this thread. People seem to think that the ONLY way you can have morals, love your country, etc. Is if your a redneck. That's not the case at all. What's being said is that this is what rednecks DO believe. It isn't saying that "non-rednecks" are completely void of morals, love of God, and such. People seem to think, as this guy so elegantly put it:
haha you really think thats what a redneck is?
i can't help thinking of people towing black people behind cars...
demanding that people of certain religions be monitored as security threats...
insisting that some people's rights are worth more than others...
being blissfully ignorant and unconcerened about the damage they do to OTHER peoples environments...
hitching up with their cousins!
So yall have fun bein rednecks now...y' hear?
That rednecks are nothing but racist, sister humping retards and thats just not true. Maybe it was 100 years ago, but it is not like that anymore. Like I said earlier, no where does it say "only rednecks believe in this stuff", but this IS the stuff that the average redneck believes in. I hope this maybe sheds some insight..

Pretty much all of this applies to christian immigrants too... and immigrants are like the complete opposite of a redneck. lol
Flatrater IS an immigrant. Ask him.
This is maybe why he's such a Bush d**k-l****r, as Bush has been very open with his immigration laws. But Bush calls himself conservative (neo-con is NOT conservative), so I guess Flat has to call himself conservative.

To me this sound more the definiton of an American than it does a redneck..... this is defining someone with Morals, Respect, Dignity, a Careing, Unselfish way of mind...... the definition of a Redneck being "Used as a disparaging term for a member of the white rural laboring class, especially in the southern United States.
A white person regarded as having a provincial, conservative, often bigoted attitude. --or-- a poor white person in the southern United States" get your facts straight....

How could you be an immigrant redneck? Rednecks are pure down south rural americans, while immigrants are big city, urban people who hold on to their culture from wherever they came from.
Immigrants usually stay in big cities cause theres more people they can relate to from their country, you wont find them in Alabama running a farm or living in a trailer park. They're typically living in apartment buildings or lower-mid class suburbs.

Dear God...I sincerely hope this was intended as an example of sarcasm as opposed to a textbook example of ignorant American generalization. Because if it is a joke, I won't bother pointing out the fact that we are all immigrants (even the farmers) many of whom had ancestors who raped, murdered, pillaged and stole this land from the Native Americans. You know...those people who sit around smoking peace pipes in their teepees and shooting arrows all day long?

Back in the ole days they called people who worked outside all day in the fields "rednecks." Why? Because they wore long sleeve shirts and they would get sun burnt on their necks and hands. We call that a farmers tan. Now for some reason we call Presidents who went to Yale a redneck.

Dear god... i sincerely hope this was intended as an example of sarcasm. An american is not an immigrant, his ancestors immigrated to America, back then they were immigrants, not anymore.
I'm talking about current immigrants, and how the F could i make an ignorant American generalization when I AM AN IMMIGRANT. I'm speaking of PURE experience, i guess you know nothing about it. I was born in Poland, where did we go to first? Chicago the Polish mecca of America, a big city, and where did we live? Where the biggest concentration of Polish immigrants was, on Milwaukee in an Apartment building. Where did we live next? Greenpoint, Brooklyn, New York.... certainly not a farm, but another place with a high concentration of Polish immigrants. Why? Because immigrants arent just going to move to a rural area, where they dont know anybody and can barely speak english, and where most likely nobody will give them a job or help them out. That is why we immigrate to big cities, because there are people from our country that can help us out.
And btw.. maybe your people did but my people never raped or pillaged any Native people or ever enslaved Africans in America cause we were under our own opression in Eastern Europe.

Meh- if you insist on being completely literal. I think you understand what I meant.

Fine...an ignorant Polish-American generalization. My apologies.

Strange, because my father's family is straight out of France and Germany- my mother's is from Scotland and Wales. Very recent immigrants. I grew up eating godawful delicacies such as haggis, tongue and beans n' toast on one side, and French country fare on the other. Occasionally my great grandfather would chase me around with a broom screaming at me in German. They moved to the suburbs of central Massachusetts. They found jobs. They made friends. I suppose they should have followed your concrete formula for the obligatory migration habits of all immigrants. So again...assumption AND generalization.
And btw.. maybe your people did but my people never raped or pillaged any Native people or ever enslaved Africans in America cause we were under our own opression in Eastern Europe.
Yep-my relatives had their own problems with the Reich, as well (even the German ones). I never raped a Native American or forced an African into endentured servitude either- but I can still feel guilty about it. Fact is we are all reaping the benefits of those crimes. There's not a whole hell of a lot we can do about it now- but at least give them the respect of acknowledging it.
So do you want to generalize any further about rednecks and/or immigrants?
