The haynes manual tells me to find tdc,mark the dist body directly below the #1 wire,then rotate the crank till the rotor points to the mark you made,but the contacts inside don't line up with the wires.
Shouldn't the rotor point to the contact not where the wire terminal is??

You need to tell us some background on what you are trying to accomplish i.e. has the crank been turned with the distributor removed....etc.
The manual should tell you to find TDC on the Compression stroke. If, I'm reading between the lines correctly, it sounds like you should rotate the crankshaft one more revolution and see if the rotor lines up with #1 plug wire in the distributor cap.

The distributor cap on the 3.0 V6 is an odd one, find where #1 is, take the cap off and follow the terminal line and that'll tell you where #1 should be. The cap is splayed or off-set; why they did that I don't know, that's Mitsubishi's smart idea.

To add even better what I meant, in case you don't understand what I said b/c looking back, that seem a little confusing, first, locate #1 on the cap, take the cap off and look under it; it makes a "W" like shape to the other side of the cap. That is where TDC is for #1 on this engine. Once you've located it, you can mark it on the body of the distributor and go from there whether you are taking out the distributor, doing the t-belt or putting in new cylinder heads.

good luck w/ those head gaskets; though doing it on this engine is not that hard, if you run in to any snags, feel free to let us know.

Ha when any directions i have read start with, jack up front and remove right front tire you know its gonna be time consuming lol.
Iam to the point where i have all the front parts off so i can see timing belt and pullies.Valve covers,Breather,alt,dist,are off just gonna start with air intake today.
I'm sure i'll be back lol

Just FYI, the second bolt on the front cylinder head by the radiator, is a 10mm hex head. You can actually leave the camshafts on and be ok, if it's a hassle to take the head off, then you might have to go on and remove the camshafts. Good luck; with a lot of time and patience, you can do it in no time.
